The title of this volume is "Berlitz Italian Pocket Dictionary." First question? Is it pocket sized? Yes indeed. This was a resource for my family on an Italian vacation a couple years ago. Indeed, this dictionary fits in my shirt pocket (then and now).This little volume has several sections--pronunciation, Italian to English dictionary, English to Italian dictionary, verbs, and numbers.The generalities, of course, are not so important. Does this work really help make sense of another language? In the course of a day in another country, consulting a dictionary for every conversation would be burdensome. But as a tool for trying to make sense of things in particular moments, this works pretty well.Overall, a satisfactory pocket dictionary. . . .
This book is a lot smaller and fatter then I expected, but it fit in my purse perfectly. I think next time I will purchase a book that also includes some phrases. I did not end up using it as much as I expected, but was great to look up words as needed.
Perfect travel size. My first trip to Italy I took my "pocket" dictionary of 5" x 7" and found it rediculously cumbersome. The Berlitz is truely a pocket size and this little dictionary went everywhere and was very very useful.
I have used this dictionary for a number of months now and have been very pleased with it. Although the dictionary is small, the type is large enough for an old coot like me to read it, and the words-to-be-defined are printed in a dark blue, thus increasing their visibility. The book is rather thick, but the binding and covers have held up nicely. And although it is a basic dictionary, I have found almost all the words that I have wanted to look up (in both the Italian and English sections), and have been pleased with the quality of the translations. All in all, I would definitely recommend this dictionary.
I bought this little dictionary for the daughter of a friend who is spending a semester of college in Italy. My friend recently reported that her daughter love this little dictionary and finds it extremely useful. Simply, she never leaves her host home without it and she calls it her "Bible" for speaking with the residents of her host country.
Nice little book to have for Italy. It has italian to english in the first half and the second half is english to italian. Get this if you're smart and don't have much packing room. When visiting other countries, try to speak their language - you'll be amazed how helpful it is.
Handy for when you need to look up a word, but you have to have some idea of the language. It doesn't explain the different word choices and you can be quite wrong if you really don't have any Italian at all. A phrasebook would be better, in that case.
This is a very useful dictionary and has most of everything you need. I used it for a trip to naturally I was mainly looking up food, directions, and a lot of basics. It missed a lot of "fancy" foods that I don't blame them for not including. The book is a little thicker than it should be (should be a little taller to make it thinner).Great buy - highly recommended.
