This series (this is the last of 3 volumes) is exceedingly well-written and, even though it is full of detailed information, even the casual history reader ought enjoy it. I have read several other biographies and historical accounts from the civil war period, but none of them have given me the same degree of satisfaction. For the first time, I have gained a thorough understanding of events as they transpired on all fronts, military and political, thanks to the author's careful structuring of the narrative. The author manages to take the reader from one theater to another, while conveying the most minute and interesting details and anecdotes, with a narrative that is fast-paced and refreshing. This is definitely not the dry, narrow-focused reading I was used to when it came to specific historical topics. Reading Shelby Foote's The Civil War is every bit as enjoyable as (but far more informative than) watching my favorite series on the History Channel.
A great outline of the sequence of events leading to the ending of the war, with illuminating insights into the personalities, skills and driving urges of the main players on both sides.
Another chapter in this enthralling series by the brilliant Shelby Foote. As always the views are from both sides of the conflict and show the best and the worst of War.I would recommend this to anyone interested in that period of history as an easy to grasp but comprehensive work. I would definitely advise for history students of the period to read this even if it is not included in the recommended literature.
Finally a good Kindle version in this series... the other two volumes are full of typos. Foote's writkng, however, is exquisite; he really enters into the people and personalities involved. I can't recommend this enough! However, try the other Kindle version.
