I have been an AP US History instructor for many years and also score the exams each year. I have reviewed thoroughly all the prep books on the market and, in my opinion, this one is superior both in its explanation of the essential elements for success on the redesigned exam and in writing style. It is also extremely well edited (unlike the Amsco which has numerous typos and repeated misspellings such as "dominate" used for "dominant" in several places in the book.) The Amsco was also obviously rushed to publication as the practice questions at the end of the book are far weaker than those at the beginning. (Many short answers at the end are only definition terms and overall the types of questions asked are very repetitive.) The Barron's, 2nd ed., shows a far better balance for all the time periods and equal strength of questions throughout.. It is also an excellent size and not as cumbersome as the Kaplan. Barron's explains very thoroughly the themes and skills of the new redesign. However, the practice test at the beginning of the book has 9 documents and practice test #2 has 8 (the exam will have only 7 as reflected in practice exam #1) and many of the passages for the multiple choice and short answer are longer than they will be on the actual exam. I am just pointing this out. It is not necessarily a negative as it is always better to over prepare. For the student who will actually READ this prep book and take careful note of what is necessary to be successful on the exam redesign, this is probably the best overall prep book on the market.
Same thorough and detailed text as the previous edition. All MCQs and essay instructions were revised to reflect new changes in APUSH exam. More practice exams. The text is formatted according to the "Key Concepts" of the CB. This is a huge +. Much improved vs. previous edition. Would benefit from more essay examples. These essays are in the 2010 edition of APUSH Barron's book.
Truly excellent review book. It's clearly written by an author that knows how to compose clear English prose. Covers the essential events, treaties, historical figures, and includes important influences by technologies, art, pop culture, media, etc. The only thing lacking are maps and charts that could elucidate the content. Much better than Kaplan, which I'd avoid at all costs - although I already wasted my money on it.
Bought this for my son. I am not the end user. Material addressed topic so 4 stars. End result is child's appetite to learn subject material and not the book. Would recommend book for those with children's and parents desire to increase knowledge and GPA.
Again, I bought this for my son, who was studying for two AP tests. He reports that this book was not nearly as helpful as the book for the AP Psychology test. He felt that it did not meet his expectations in terms of preparing him for the test.
Great studying tool for the ap test. It's more informative than the test books that they offer at school. If this book is read from cover to cover. It's would definately have a positive effect on your ap test scores.
I just recently took the 2015 APUSH exam. This was fairly long (for me) and had too much general ideas. At first, It was also kind of confusing how they structured the book because I was expecting something straightforward and chronologically ordered. This had 3 sections for each unit with 3 topics or general points. It contained a lot of information that I didn't learn in my class (band not even needed for the exam). I had to look over to my friend's crash course APUSH review book (much better btw) because It lacked some information that I actually was looking forward to. Although most of the info was hard to look for because the book liked to repeat things a lot, the information wasn't really that bad and made it clearer for me once I got the hang of the book.Lastly, the questions in the AP were so much easier than the questions in the review book.
Eh. This book reflects the changes made by College Board to the new AP US History exam, but the way that Barrons organized this book is quite strange. This is a good book, but there are certainly better alternatives (Princeton Review, Amsco, Essential Content). I would recommend buying one of the others.
