I ordered my copy of Presnell's "The Information Literate Historian" which is labeled as the Second Edition (Copyright 2013/2007) and it is a total mess. Apparently whoever did the revisions in the second edition never did any serious editing, because the pages are out of sequence, the chapters are a total jumble and the Table of Contents lists chapters that don't exist (Ex.: Chapter 3). Another reader also mentioned these problems and gave the book a "1-star" rating here on - and I fully agree with their assessment. The book I ordered was for my course in "Historical Methods" at American Public University and it was purchased through the APU Bookstore. I will let them know of this problem, but this is a warning to anyone else ordering this book- DON'T BUY IT. IT IS A TOTAL MASS OF GIBBERISH. I've never experienced this problem with any book I ordered from from , but I wanted to let the authorities know that this book should NOT be on their purchase list. I would have given this book "0-stars", but that rating is not available. BUYER BEWARE!! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
I ordered my copy via Prime, fulfilled by Jenson online, and I paid $17.97. The first thing I did was to look for missing pages, chapters, and poor collation by the publisher, per the warnings so amply provided by other Reviewers. The good news is: I did not find any such problems in my copy of this book.Secondly, my copy was tagged as a "Used-Good" category. It is in good well worn condition; obviously, the former owner was a female college student, who left penned notes and reminders in a very dainty feminine script which I found charming. I have no doubt that I will find these notes useful as I undertake my university course starting in Jan 2016. So, thank you, my anonymous friend for your notes. This book is for the HIST 300 "Historical Craft" course at Texas A&M University. I skimmed through the contents for a general overview and it appears to be a book that is full of practical advice, counsel, techniques, ideas for the budding historian who will no doubt need this information to conduct research and write based on all the sources available and make judicious decisions that contributes to the body of historical knowledge.I plan to edit and expand this review after the culmination of my course in May 2016.
My copy of The Information-Literate Historian is defective. It is missing pages and is bound incorrectly. I was unable to read chapter 2 as all but the first page is missing. It jumps from page 26 to 171 continues to 218 then back to 75 and so on, the rest of the book is messed up too. So basically I have two copies of chapter 7. I ordered it early for a class and didn't notice the mistake until after the return date, so in the end I had to buy two.
Check your copy EARLY if at all. If this is for a course, I'd buy it early and make sure it's correct! Pages 27-74 are MISSING. Since the seller has some history with returns having this problem, WHY are they still being sold. Bad faith, not worth the time problem it has made for me.
This is also a must have for academics in higher education. I would highly recommend this book for anyone that will be involved in research at the higher education level.
I recently looked at this and four other books that I was considering using for my historical fiction research. I found this book to be especially useful as a source of websites of value for historical research. You can find my full thoughts on this and the other books at www.lorettatollefson.com/wordpress
Very useful for my Historical Methods course.
I needed this for my inquiry to history class. This book helps me so much! It's a must have if you're interested in majoring in history.
