Remembering Michigan's Civil War Soldiers (Images Of America)

When the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry regiment arrived in Washington, DC, President Lincoln exclaimed: Thank God for Michigan! The state raised more than 90,000 men to serve during the Civil War, and 69 of them received the Medal of Honor. Notable Michiganders include Gens. Israel Richardson, Orlando Poe, Alpheus Williams, Orlando Willcox, and George Hartsuff, as well as The Boy General, George Armstrong Custer, and Officer Norman Hall, who was stationed at Fort Sumter when the war began. A book full of soldier portraits containing a brief account of their service might seem something to pick up at a library or bookstore, only worth the few moments it takes to thumb through and catch a few glimpses of these heroes of the past. Instead, try this: purchase the book; sit down quietly for five minutes at the first opportunity, read the text, and study the image of the person described, imagining the life represented, the decision to fight for Union and liberty, and the potential or real cost of that step. You will come away with a sense of awe and of personal connection to these soldiers as you turn each page, wondering how it is that each stepped forward. You will undoubtedly repeat that five minutes again and again, still coming away each time with wonderment. Perusing and savoring it again this Memorial Day weekend, the book remains quietly powerful.

I am sure I will love it if and when it ever gets here!

Great book and I'm very pleased.

Probably not the most authoritative or complete book on the subject, but it was just fine for me. I learned a lot of things I did not know previously and I have no desire to be a true Civil War expert. I like this series of books. I find them all to be worth the time and effort to read. Printed in USA, too. It kept my interest. Stayed up too late reading it and paid the price the next day. It was that good.
