Ok, this is a workbook more than a tutorial. With that in mind, it will help your score on the SAT. Actually, ANY prep and practice will help your scores on any standardized test, so there's nothing that special here. However, it is an honest resource that does appear to comprehensively drill you on the types of problems you will face on the SAT.As with all Kaplan book this is organized very well and does a good job on incorporating problem solving approaches to different types of problems.Note that his does come with an answer key (if you're curious) and also a full length practice test.Kaplan's solid here, but if you are bad at math you should look for additional resources. If you're already in good shape, this is more like mathematical calisthenics for your brain.
My sophomore recently took the PSAT and did well. She used a Kaplan guide as part of her preparation so I figured I’d stick with Kaplan for her SAT prep. This math focused book is broken down into several key sections that each serve a purpose of helping her understand and properly prepare for the math portion of the SAT. The book starts with instructions on how to properly use the guide for maximum benefit. It then moves into a comprehensive description and breakdown of the math test. After the breakdown, it goes into test taking tips and dispels common myths before moving into the main portions of actual test preparation, test taking strategies and building foundation skills. There are numerous useful tips provided including advising what type of calculator to use, how to answer the questions for maximum scoring and how to efficiently manage time during the test. There are 16 practice sets that include mini-tests, answers and explanations and breakdowns of the solutions. These are all very good for detecting any deficient areas. There is a full practice test at the end with an answer sheet that can be removed and photocopied for re-use. She hasn’t taken the SAT yet but so far I like what the guide offers. We have already found it to be very useful so far.
Having a middle schooler and now a high schooler I've been reading and reviewing a lot PSAT and SAT and ACT guide books. Most of them are Kaplan. In that regard I find this workbook one of Kaplan's best.WHAT I LIKED right off the bat was the authors' suggestions on how to take the test. While all Kaplan books have information about that, I thought the advice in this book was the clearest and best managed. Part of their advice, by the way, is clearing up SAT myths -- like the one about there being a penalty for wrong answers; and like answer C is the best to choose if you have to guess.I also like how they tell kids the best approach for each section, as well as the best calculator to take with you.I also liked the mini review they had that kids could read before taking even the preview test. I believe it will help focus my childrens' attention before the preview test and the real test.NOTE though that although there are answers to the questions, the explanations are brief. So like all Kaplan books the reader may need some supplemental help if there's a true area of weakness.
Excellent SAT study book that focus on math. Our son has struggled on math over the years. This workbook has given him additional confidence and has increased his Kaplan practice test scores (a separate book). Rather than going in depth on math topics, it summarizes critical fundamental points and provides hints for success. However, this is not a substitute for deep understanding of the topics. Still, this workbook provides good hints and helps you identify week areas. A good workbook to prep for the SAT math questions.
Good review material for the new SAT math, especially since many of the details of what the content of the exam will be are not yet known. However, many of the questions, especially in the Hard category, seem to be merely repeats of the review material, rather than what you'll see on the actual test.
This is a very nice workbook for students who are ready to take the new SAT. I am glad this is not humongous. It has 16 units with thorough review of the concepts, practice problems that go from easy to hard and a full length practice test at the end.My 8th grader is a Johns Hopkins Talented Youth and has been taking high school math for 2+ years. He will be taking his first SAT this year. Will update once he completes it.
I have been tutoring SAT math for years and while this book contains many important topics covered on the test, there isn't enough topic review or explanation before students can try out the practice problems presented. Often times, I have to borrow from other resources to provide examples that better explain the concepts. I would recommend Peterson's Master the New SAT for preparing for the new SAT math~
It is ok, not great because while it breaks all problems into easy, medium, hard categories, in reality, only hard category is what you are likely to see on the SAT. Take a look at the sample problems for official SAT site and compare. Most problems are formatted and worded very differently from any SAT samples that come from College Board directly.Still, I liked the explanations, and the book makes a good general Math review for late middle school and early high school.
