If you've recently taken algebra, this book is probably a sufficient review. If you've been out from any kind of math since high school, this book was not adequate in the review process. It did have good advice on test taking strategies and which formulas to memorize for the test. I relied heavily on Khan Academy to supplement the content of this book. My main issue was the lack of practice problems, and somewhat cumbersome explanations of certain math concepts. I'd recommend downloading more practice problems from the Internet. The online practice tests did not adequately explain wrong answers. On the upside, the practice tests were much harder than the actual CLEP test. Generally, you need 50 to count. I got a 71 out of a maximum score of 80. I prepped seriously for 2 months, and I hadn't taken any math classes in 17 years.
My daughter, age 15, homeschooled just took this CLEP test today at received a score of 62, a passing score is 50! This book was VERY helpful, after taking the diagnostic test first, studying what she needed to learn, then doing the final tests along with three on-line Peterson tests, she is highly recommending this book!
Pros:-Organized table of contents and index that makes this a good reference guide.-Good book to get started on all the fundamentals.-Has online tests so you can practice making time-sensitive choices (the benefit of having an overly-difficult test I guess).-Does not give you any false sense of security about how prepared you are (actually the opposite).Cons:-Too much depth, not enough breadth. Places too much emphasis on certain types of questions, and makes you learn to solve more difficult problems than necessary, instead of making sure that you cover all your basis.-Discouraging online "score results." It told me I was weak in most subjects no matter what and always told me I had no "strongest" topics. For reference to what your score might be, REA gave me a top score of 48 (with guessing when I was running out of time) on its online practice tests and I got a 68 on the actual CLEP. REA claims you should aim for a 70 or above on the online tests to pass the CLEP.-Some bad methodology recommended. Here is the real best way to solve all the logarithm problems: for log[whatever base]([whatever number]), just type log([number])/log([base]) into the calculator to get the exponent. I learned this from Wikipedia, and it's not covered in the book.-The online tests have stuff that isn't even covered in the book (the polynomial remainder theorem?).-Even though this is supposed to be from this year, the writer seems to think that this is still a paper test (based on the testing tips section). It is a computerized test now with an onscreen calculator. How did you write this book and miss that?-No onscreen calculator to practice with on the online tests. You can download a trial of the onscreen calculator used on the test here (it's the scientific calculator): http://www.infinitysw.com/ets/It needs to be supplemented with collegeboard's official CLEP study guide. It is much more accurate to the level of difficulty (the math is less difficult, the way questions are phrased is more difficult) and covers a wider variety of types of question than REA does. I'll still give it 3 stars though because it's worth getting to use as a reference and starter.
I took College Algebra in HS and attempted the CLEP around 3 years later. I spent about five serious days studying (6+ hours a day) and took the test. I passed. The book is a sufficient review and the online tests are beneficial too. If I would have spent more time in the book, I could have received a higher score off this book.
explained info really good. you need to have a general idea of algebra to understand the information. don't get this book and think it is going to teach you algebra from beginning to end. shipped and rx quick and easy.
it has a 6 week study plan which helped me pass the clep but you need to study at LEAST 2-3 hours a day
Our son has successfully completed fourteen CLEP examinations for a total of 48 transferrable college credits. He has used the REA books in almost all cases supplemented by the DIVE curriculum for the advanced math and Biology tests. In all cases, he has found these resources to reasonably represent the information needed to successfully pass the CLEP exams, although additional study guides, and videos should be used whenever possible to ensure test success.CLEP ExamCollege AlgebraCollege PrecalculusCollege BiologyCollege CalculusIntroductory PsychologyIntroductory SociologyPrinciples of MacroeconomicsPrinciples of MicroeconomicsInfo Sys & Computer ScienceHuman Growth & DevelopmentCollege CompositionPrinciples of ManagementPrinciples of MarketingAnalyze & Interpreting Literature
I am using as a guide to teach a high school prep course for preparation for the CLEP College Algebra test. I find it comprehensive and easy to use. Also, includes codes for online practice test (I have not used yet).
