If you're on a budget and don't have $285 for the Helm shop manual, this techbook just published in 2013 might just answer some questions that a first time diesel owner like myself might like answered without paying an arm and a leg. On special for less than $18, if this book helps me make one repair, it will pay for itself. BASED on a FIRST GEN. LB7 it seems to cover the differences between the models through 2012 pretty well as the DURAMAX seems to go through a transition (for the better) every year or so. The book does have some captions for things on LLY and up model years. I didn't know this book even existed till I saw on . You won't find at the partstore (@ time of the review-10/2013)
All you need for severing and repairing duramax engines. I could't find any book at my local mechanics shop so I had to get it here. Very helpful. I used it to help guide me on replacing my injectors on my 2002 truck.
I am very disappointed in this manual. I have been using Haynes manuals for years. The information that is in this book is good, but the things that are covered are relatively useless. It goes into a lot of detail for a major engine rebuild, while it gives very little information on things that the typical home mechanic would find useful. I imagine that the engine rebuild information would not be good enough to actually do that type of repair either.An example of something that is missing is the procedure for rebuilding the fuel filter head. This is a common repair on these engines, and it is not even remotely covered in the book. Fortunately, youtube is out there for our use. It does not have any information on the transmission either. Since the majority of Duramax engines come coupled with the Allison transmission, you would think that it would warrant a mention. Simple things like capacities would be useful. I would buy it again, but I am very disappointed with it overall. It does not measure up to Haynes manuals of the past.
Great source of information. However on fuel filter priming they left out the part of opening the fuel bleeder screw to vent air. The oil pressure spec is also incorrect. They have it listed as 29psi @1800rpm. The correct spec is 45psi @1800rpm. Other then these two issues its a great resource to have.
If you own a Duramax Diesel this manual is written in a way that is easy to understand and gives alternative ways of making the repair that a GM manual will not. Very pleased with this manual.
This is exactly what I expected, As with all Haynes manuals, they are not the most detailed on all repairs. However, for the average home mechanic it will save you many hours of flusteration and dollars in labor costs! For the cost of its purchase verses dealer versions, you can't go wrong!
Lots of technical details, especially for a complete rebuild. Nothing much on simple maintenance, like oil and filter changes. Not a major criticism, but not for the guy who wants to maintain his vehicle. Just know what you are buying.
I bought this to learn how the Allison transmission mates up. Don't know what I was expecting I guess since it's clearly a book just for the engine. If you are simply looking for transmission removal/installation procedures, this book ain't it.
