Single Moms Raising Sons: Preparing Boys To Be Men When There's No Man Around

How can a single mother provide her son with the strength and wisdom most boys receive from their fathers? How will her son learn to be a good man without a healthy male influence around? In today’s world, many women--single mothers, grandmothers, even military wives--are left with the responsibility of raising children on their own. Being a single parent comes with many challenges, but for women one of the most difficult is to raise sons to be strong men and good fathers without a healthy male role model in the home. In Single Moms Raising Sons, Dana Serrano Chisholm speaks from her own experience as a single mother of two boys and inspires other single moms to partner with God--the Father of the fatherless. She teaches them to find strength and wisdom as they allow Christ to be their partner in very real ways--helping them raise their children. From financial concerns to passing on macho, Single Moms Raising Sons supplies honest insight, unifying encouragement, and practical applications to guide mothers as they raise their boys to be the solid, Christian men they want them to be.

Wow, it's about time somebody wrote a book about this! I have experience in trying to raise my boys without their dad in the house, so I can immediately relate to this author.I was surprised by how much humor is here --- plus how much help. It's nice to know that we don't struggle alone, other people have been here too, and they've learned some things to pass along!See below for my choice of "best book" about single parenting.Lauren HodgeApple Valley, CaliforniaI highly recommend: Raising Great Kids on Your Own: A Guide and Companion for Every Single Parent

I love this book. I have tried to read books on raising your child on your own but found them dull, preachy, not applicable, etc. But this book is wonderful, light hearted, humorous, inspiring and insightful. There are many ideas that I am going to use and I also found a closer bond in my faith. I am reassured and a little less worried after finishing this book. It's nice to know I am not alone and I am not the only one who thinks and worries over little things!

This book captures single-motherhood from a whole new angle. There are plenty of books on surviving single parenting, but none that approach it from the perspective of God in the Father's seat. Chisholm's first-hand experience makes her an ideal author and her unique insight is an asset to single mom's everywhere.

If you're raising a son without a man around, Dana's insightful book provides help and hope with a lot of humor. Dana reminds us as single mom's that with God's help and sheer resilience we can raise our sons to be well-adjusted, responsible young men. Pick up this book and you'll be a better parent for it.Cassandra Mack, host of The No More Drama Hour of Power and author of, "The Single Mom's Little Book of Wisdom: 42 Tidbits of Wisdom To Help You Survive, Succeed and Stay Strong."

The anecdotes shared in this book are refreshingly honest. The lessons she shares from her own life contain many insights into not only the mental and emotional needs of young boys, but also contain practical ways that she was able to address those needs. I plan on using many of her strategies in dealing with my own 3 1/2 year old son.On another note, though this is written from a Christian perspective, I see how people from other religious traditions could still benefit from the basic principles and wisdom Dana shares throughout the book and make it applicable to their own lives, traditions, and beliefs. This is not a reference book on being a single mom, but rather it's a light, uplifting read packed with insight and wisdom. I find myself picking it up time and again when I'm having a difficult day.

I bought this book for a friend, but did not give it to her because after perusing it, I don't think she would have received it as I meant for her to have it. The book does have some good information and I may give it to her later. So far, she is only into reading fiction books.

Good read, and as a single mom to a son, makes me feel good. However, the message is rather repetitive. Not a bad book at all, just nothing I would rave about. I probably would not read it again nor would I choose this author for this specific subject again.

I have nothing against this book, but it had more to do with Christian inspiration as a single mom than actual advice, tips, and/or explanations about single motherhood. I have nothing against her belief system and noticed it mentioned Christ in the description. I have read useful books with a Christian tilt before, so I was not concerned, but please be warned this is a lot more than simply a Christian tilt. The book has Jesus or Christ or God mentioned on every page. I waited for that to be related to something more tangible that I could use, but it was essentially a sermon and a cathartic exercise for the author. This may be what some people were looking for, but I think that renaming the book to better reflect the actual content would help. I put it back on whenever I figured out it wasn't going to help me.
