As a single father raising two children, I was looking for and expected a lot more specific and practical helpful advice. Its an easy read, but I estimate this book to be approximately 90% "encouragement".I think this is a book the author would have liked to have available when in this same circumstance, but it may be better categorized for most people as a 'spiritualistic' guide than a plain survival guide. Author does a good job covering the need to take care of yourself while taking care of a family and to get help when needed.I do NOT recommend it to men needing specific help with problems.I DO recommend it to men looking for encouragement and fundamental Christian Bible passages to help you through problems.
The Single Dad's Survival Guide by Mike Klumpp is a logical and "father friendly" guide emphasizing on how to deal with the practical as well as the emotional issues in the challenges and issues involved with being a single male parent today. From dealing with logistical problems like household management; to protecting one's own mental health while coping with strong-willed young ones; to resources one can contact when ones needs assistance; to overcoming anger, hurt, and fatigue in difficult times, and so much more, The Single Dad's Survival Guide is an absolute "must-read" which offers up a wealth of wisdom directly applicable to all parents regardless of gender or marital status -- for any spouse home alone for a week while the other is on a business trip will grapple with some of the parenting issues and problems discussed herein.
I ordered this book and only upon receiving it did I realize that it was written from a Christian perspective. I think a disclaimer would have been useful: Warning - God-Based, or something like that. This guy, upon discovering his daughter has just had her period, goes out and buys her a rose and a card "containing a statement she could use as a budding woman in service to God."Is that creepy, or is it just me?Anyway, I think the book is completely hopeless.
This book has helped me a bunch. There's no way to be exhaustive, so If you're looking for that, look elsewhere. It's practical and the author is upfront about how he's managed to make single parenting work for him. I recommend it for those who need a pick me up and a person who knows what a single dad goes through.
A wonderful piece of literature for anyone, not just single dad's. There are stories that are hilarious and touching moments that make you cry. Even though it is from a spiritual standpoint it is a good read for anyone. I have met the author and Mike is a genuine man with knowledge beyond his own credentials. I would also suggest reading I: AM the Miracle, another read that Mike Klumpp floods you with emotion. On top of it all any poetry, short stories, or play writes you can find or get your hands on written by this eclectic humanitarian, Grab them take the opportunity to read learn and trust this poetic warrior.
