Farwell's Rules Of The Nautical Road

Professional mariners, military and civilian, will find this book to be an invaluable reference in understanding the rules of the road and the role these rules play in managing the risk of collision. The author provides a thorough commentary on the rules and an analysis of collision cases involving abuse of the rules. Maritime attorneys and judges will find the book continues to be an indispensable reference on collision law as Craig Allen provides a mariner's insight into how the rules apply in context and their application by the courts and administrative tribunals. This new edition completely revises chapters on the rules pertaining to good seamanship and special circumstances and on restricted visibility, and it vastly expands coverage of the narrow channel rule, traffic separation schemes, and the application of the rules to high-speed craft. It also extensively revises materials on the look out and risk of collision responsibilities to update coverage on radar and ARPA and to address new technologies, such as integrated bridge systems, automatic identification systems, voyage data recorders and the increasingly active role of VTS. The first update in ten years, the eighth edition upholds and even surpasses the standards set over the past sixty years of the guide's publication.

Farwell's should be on every professional mariner's bookshelf. This book is the most in depth and thorough presentation on the nautical rules and how they are interpreted that anyone has ever assembled. Filled with references to legal cases and decisions that support the reasons behind each rule, Farwells's is used by admiralty lawyers everyday. The book also traces the history of each rule, and discusses the difference inland and COLREGS rules. This book would not be recommended to a recreational boater who is looking to just learn the rules for a test. This is a thick, heavy reference that explores every nuance and detail of each rule. It is however, an excellent reference for any professional mariner who ever has command authority on board a vessel.

My husband is a Naval Officer serving as a navigator. He is a big "rules" guy so he got more excited than any normal person should for this book. It gives in depth information on the Rules of the Road, including related court cases.

There is difference in passing a rules of the road test and actually knowing the rules. This book breaks down the rules giving historic information as to why the rule exists and how it should be interpreted. A must for the professional mariner. Written by a professional mariner who is also a lawyer.

The content of this book exceeded my expectations. Originally purchased to increase my knowledge of a couple of the rules of the road. This text provides so much more. History of the rules, including case citations and plenty of easy to understand examples. I find myself picking it up often to just read. Excellent in all respects.

I used this to prepare for a presentation on 72 COLREGS and INLAND Rules for a U.S.Coast Guard Auxilary conference. It was very thorough in explaining rules and also providing case histories handed down over the years.

Without a doubt this is one of the finest textbooks written about maritime safety. It has been said that vessel pilots are not lawyers, but this book certainly emphasizes of knowing the rules of the nautical road and obeying them. It certainly should move the conscientious helmsman from the old position of "that's what company lawyers are for" to the more responsible position of knowing the COLREGS or INLAND RULES well enough to avoid tragic mistakes. Allen's students at the University of Washington should have no trouble staying interested in his class.

As someone who dabbles in the hundred ton community, and am a BM in the CG, you should buy this if the COLREGS really piss you off. And they piss all of us off. SO buy it. It explains everything is pretty great detail, and gives you a ton of reference material. Its like the BOWDITCH or JANES for Nav rules.

An authoritative interpretation & explanation of the presently used Collision Regulations - valuable for all classes of vessels & operators both commercial & recreatiional
