Agree with other lower star ratings here. 5 stars for substance, 1 star for format and 1 star for utility. The format is absurd. Naturally, you'll want to try and answer a question you're presented with *before* you take a look at the answer. This book makes such a task just shy of impossible. The format literally looks like this:Question 1:In the state of X, the law is Y. Plaintiff sues defendant for Z. How should the Court rule?A.) For P because whatever.B.) For P because some other reason.C.) For D because something.D.) For D because something else.THE ANSWER IS A! [Explanation follows here.]Now, the explanations are beyond fantastic and if you're using this book to supplement your understanding of an area of law beyond a simple outline and in a format you're more likely to find on the MBE, this book will help. However, constantly attempting to hide answers before I can see them when I flip the pages makes the book beyond cumbersome and infuriating to deal with. Maybe that's a petty complaint, but for me, it made the book one of my least favorite tools to study with.
Just took the NY Bar and I cannot tell you how may concepts in contracts,torts,evidence ,criminal procedure law, were directly on point. Invaluable aid in preparation.
I have both the 1st and 5th additions of these guides. The 1st and 5th are better in that they have actual questions taken from MBEs. In this version, the questions are written by Emanuel. They're just as tough as other questions, but they're not actual MBE questions. The major thing that is both a pro and a con (depending on personal preference) is that the answers are immediately below the question. This is great because there's no flipping back and forth. This is not good because there's really no reason to use answer worksheet in the back to record answers, since most of the time, my eye automatically goes to the answer when I flip the page. I really don't like that set up. I have to use a folded sheet of paper and kind of divert my eyes when I turn to a new page and then slide the paper down to the end of answer D just so I don't see the right answer before analyzing the question on my own.I think this is a good first book to start with. You learn a lot about the law in the answer explanations. With this book, I go through each question and the answer explanation before moving on to the next. After you're done with this book, then go on to the 1st or 5th edition, and use the answer sheet and go through 5-10 questions of the same subject, analyze them, and then go through the answers.These are great study guides to the Bar and have really given me some confidence for the MBE. Also, there are cards included that allow you access to a bank of Civ Pro questions online since this version was written before those were on the MBE. Thank you Emanuel for that!
If you feel like you don't have enough MBE questions to practice on or that you need a little variety from Barbri, then this book is for you. It's not like the first strategies and tactics, it's just more questions and longer, fuller explanations sorted by topics. Worth it if you have the time for additional questions.
Heading by heading great explanations to all core MBE subjects. Well designed and properly organized. Easy to understand. I would recommend the product with Barbri /Kaplan for deeper knowledge of subtopics for MBE.
Bought both of these books when studying for the PA Bar. I recommend starting your MBE studying with working through these books entirely and then moving onto bar course questions. I found the explanations in here incredibly helpful. I honestly think that these books raised my score by at least a couple points.
Unbelievable amounts of errors in questions and typo. e.g. call of the question is what is the best answer but the answer contained what was wrong answer with explanation. Answer choices were A, S, R, T rather than A,B,C,D and indicates correct answer is B. This is continuous thru out the book. Las book prep with such error is pure non-sense.
Not as good as the originally. Save your money and purchase the original emanuel Strategies and Tactics books. This one was a bit redundant, the organization wasn't that great, and it was not as helpful as the regular MBE book.
