I purchased this book in August 2014 as a primary study resource for the FTCE Social Science 6-12 test. In January 2015, after months of intermittent studying between working two part-time jobs, I passed the test on my first try... with and without the aid of this book.I'll start by critiquing the content of how this book is structured chapter by chapter (ranked 1 to 10, with 1 being awful and 10 being awesome), followed by my opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the book as a whole, and then my overall insights to help you capitalize where the book succeeds at and falls short of helping you pass this important test.So let's start with those chapters, shall we?GEOGRAPHY: This section of the book provides a primer that will adequately suffice for the sake of this test. The five themes of geography discussed is the most informative part here. However, this section is largely underwhelming due to the author's blasé attitude toward the subject and lack of illustrated examples on how to analyze a given map. While there are lots of bolded terms on the study of geography, there is a glaring omission of terms related to geographical formations (such as a basin, isthmus, tributary, etc.), which constituted several questions on my actual test. Look this section over once so you're familiar with what you'll be tested on, and then find a stand-alone atlas or world history textbook with a supplemental atlas to provide a greater depth on geography. (4/10)ECONOMICS: This brief chapter, unlike geography, comes closer to reality when outlining what you must know for the test. While a lot of economic questions I had were more practical than theoretical, the concepts you will need to apply are here. Pay close attention to competencies 2.1 through 2.
