I bought this book to review for the ASVAB for the purpose of qualifying for Army Officer Candidate School.As a 23-year old college graduate with a liberal arts degree, my biggest concern was the math. While seemingly innocuous, I was at first intimidated by some of the algebra and division in the review section. Going through the problems with the book, and practicing on my own helped bring me back to speed. I did notice that there were a few math errors in the book, however I don't feel as qualified to comment on the quality of the math section as a whole because of my own mathematical limitations. I can say however, that the math in the review and practice sections does go a bit beyond what is in the actual computerized ASVAB.Regardless, the math review got me up to speed, and the English review section, while unneeded for my purposes, seemed like it could help those less acquainted with the language.As for my results, I scored a 95 on the ASVAB, and a 135 on the GT section. I studied maybe five solid hours for the math portion in the weeks prior to the test, and another six hours going over the whole book at MEPS the day before the test. Not bad, I'd say.
This is the BEST study guide for the AFQT section on the ASVAB I have ever used. I am a successful ASVAB tutor. I generally help those who scored below the cutoff score. This book is a great value! It deals ONLY with the 4 sub tests that determine your AFQT score. Many study guides cost twice as much and waste your time. Absolutely buy this book! Andy [...]
I felt compelled to write a review seeing that this product has the potential to create disastrous results for students who feel uncomfortable with the math portion of the ASVAB. While the basic reviews of the math portions are well written with great examples, the three tests AND the four tests that on the CD are plagued with math errors. If you're mathematically competent and can spot errors, you should be alright. However, if you're incompetent and come across one of these errors you will spend HOURS, DAYS, and potentially a lifetime trying to figure out where you went wrong. This can create an infinite mental loop error where even if you had the correct answer, you will start questioning your competence. Your confidence will be shattered and will likely to do poorly on the actual ASVAB. This is a serious problem, and it's shocking that these errors weren't discovered by the editor.As I said, on the other hand, if you can spot the math errors in the practice tests, you should be alright. However, with these errors, you're forced to question the validity of the work as a whole. If there are blatant math errors, have other errors gone unnoticed?I actually got good use out of the book. I write this review only to warn others looking for a solid study guide. Bottom line- DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!! This book will put you at a disadvantage in the math portion of the ASVAB.
There were so many mistakes in the math section what should have been an easy review of High School math turned tortuous. As well, it advertises 8 practice exams on the cover when in fact THERE ARE ONLY TWO!!!I want my money back. Steer clear wary consumer.
I thought the book was going to look old but I looks new, it's a great way to buy a book
