There are many reasons why I gave this book 1 star. I will begin with what I initially thought of it, then what I think of it after taking the NES exam.I took the test in Washington State, about a month after they switched the requirements from the WEST E to the NES, and studied periodically from the middle of August to the end of October when I took this test. I felt that I had a good grasp on the material. My test was interrupted by a lockdown, so I only know what half of the test is like (Subtest 1).Before taking the test, I would have given the book 4 stars. It is a comprehensive study guide that covers content knowledge in every subject area the NES tests you on. It gives you lots and lots of facts and definitions, which would likely have been helpful on the WEST E (since I have heard it IS a content test, but I haven't taken it so I don't know for sure). However, it has dozens of typos, which made me question whether or not they knew what they were talking about. Some of the "facts" were obviously tinted by the writer's opinions (such as the section on communism). When I was taking the self-assessment at the end, several questions had nothing to do with content covered by the book, and there were a lot of questions that had wrong answers in the answer key. By that I mean that the answer might be A, but they will say it is B, even though their explanation agrees with A as the answer. There are also actual WRONG answers (in the math section they replaced numbers in the answer key), and there were a few questions that could have been multiple answers (e.g. Hickory Dickory Dock, the mouse ran up the clock--end rhyme or consonance? Apparently consonance, but it also displays end rhyme).Even with all of this, I still felt like I was prepared for the test. It seemed like the writers of the book just rushed through the writing of it, and I could handle that. After taking the test, though, I would give it zero stars if I could. Absolutely NONE of what I studied in this book was on my test. Now, I will preface this with the fact that I never got to finish my test. There was a lockdown at the test center preventing me from finishing either subtest, so I never reached the math or science section. I think the math section would probably be about the same, but I will update this after I re-take the tests. The problem was that the book covers content knowledge. The test covers instructional methods. You get asked things like "what are the best methods for teaching A" or "Mr. Smith read this to his class, what technique was he using?" These aren't in the book. Ok, there are a few of them in the book, but not enough to cover the whole test. For the social studies part, none of what I studied was on my test. This part was more factual, but the content covered more about current processes and economics than history. This may be a product of the version I got. Again, I will update this when I take the test again. All in all, I would recommend using the NES study tool found on their website: http://www.nestest.com/PageView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/GENRB_NESPrep.html. I bought it today and just the diagnostic test looks more like the test you take when you're actually in the examination room. It is more expensive, since you have to buy the guide for both subtests, but I think it will be more worth your money and time.Edit: The math section is appropriate. The science portion will depend on what questions you get asked on your test. I didn't feel like much of it was covered in the book, but I passed anyway so something must have stuck. I think it's really just a crap shoot for science and history/social studies questions, making it very difficult to study for.

I am very disappointed with the content and practice exams in this book. DO NOT BUY THIS. After taking the online NES practice tests and paying the money for them, this book had about 1/3 of the actual content that was being tested. I should have noticed this earlier so I had more time to study the CORRECT content.

I passed both tests associated with this book. However, I also bought the practice tests offered online by NES and those helped me much more than this book. The good thing about this study guide is that it gave me a great starting place and an overall picture of what might be presented on the tests. It has succinct information on each topic and the information is laid out/outlined in a very user friendly manner. But beyond this the book is lacking. The book cover touts that there are "real test secrets revealed" in this book. Well, I guess those secrets are just "embedded" because there is no "test-taking tips or secrets" section anywhere in the book. Yes, there are some concepts in this study guide that are on the test, but there are several that aren't. And yes, as many have mentioned, there are a few typos/wrong answers, but those are so obvious that it didn't bother me.Most importantly, the questions on the practice tests in this study guide (only one practice test for each sub-test by the way) are not (AT ALL) like the questions on the real tests. The practice questions in this book are much less complex than the questions on the real NES tests.Bottom line . . . this book does not align well with the real test and only about 1/3 of the material in this book is on test. My recommendation is to buy the NES practice tests online/on their website to get a much better idea of what the questions will be like on the real test.

I'm really happy with this book. It was the only study book I got for this exam, and I still excelled with no problem at all. This book teaches everything you need to know for the NES exam, and even more than that. It also covers various testing, memorization, and studying strategies that will also help with not only this exam, but future exams also.

Came in perfect condition. Would have given it a 5 star, but there are multiple misprints, like parts get cut off. There were also typos in the answers to the subtest bases on which letter the correct answer was, but the description of the answer was for the correct answe.

I enjoy reading this book very much. I think it's a great addition to other books to study and pass the exam. This book is easy to understand, however, it has lots of typos and a few wrong answers on the post est unrelated to the question being ask.I was a little disappointed. Thanks.Mary Poppins.

I used this as a resource to help me prepare for my subtest 1 and 2. I passed the subtest 1 and am taking the 2 later this week. Word of caution. Do not just go through this and expect to pass. You need to use the information in the book as a spring board. Write down vocabulary as you go and review, review, review.

My background is in nursing, but I needed a teaching certificate to teach in a charter school. I took the NES in Arizona and passed after studying, but this book was only a little helpful. It as organized great and had easy to understand diagrams and tables, but the test questions were nothing like those presented in this book, especially for the math section. There is only one test and it is really, really easy. I would likely get a different study guide, as I don't feel this was representative of the test.
