Silencing The Past: Power And The Production Of History, 20th Anniversary Edition

Foreword by Hazel V. Carby   A modern classic about power and the making of history, with a new foreword by a prominent scholar  Placing the West’s failure to acknowledge the most successful slave revolt in history alongside denials of the Holocaust and the debates over the Alamo and Christopher Columbus, Michel-Rolph Trouillot offers a stunning meditation on how power operates in the making and recording of history. Presented here with a new foreword by renowned scholar Hazel V. Carby, Silencing the Past is an indispensable analysis of the silences in our historical narratives, of what is omitted and what is recorded, what is remembered and what is forgotten, and what these silences reveal about inequalities of power.

This is by far one of the best books on History that a person interested in history could ever read. It stays with you decades after your first reading, and provides new and powerful insights on each rereading. It was as influential in my historical thinking as Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, and more thought-provoking than the entire corpus of Subaltern Studies. If you are not interested in history--and if you think that the Haitian revolution is not interesting enough for a scholar to develop a conceptual analysis of history, your interest in history is quite... defective--you may wish to skip this text and read something on the American or French Revolutions. For the hundredth time.

Great Book

Got to me quickly. Wonderful book.

A potentially fascinating topic ruined by poor writing and poor publishing. First, the title of the book should be "Silencing the history of Haiti" as that is 90% of the content, the other 10% is a brief discussion on the Alamo for comparison. The biggest issue is the author writes as if he is doing a thesis paper for a Doctorate program. He goes out of his way to find words no one has used in 50 years other than maybe two professors arguing while trying to impress each other.Very frustrating is that this edition has 16 random pages that are completely missing the text that should be on that page. Example, you go from page 69 to a blank page 70 and 71 than the story picks up on page 72 having skipped whatever the author wrote for those two pages. And again, SIXTEEN PAGES ARE BLANK, if you were not feed up with the writing you will get feed up with the story skipping like that.I understand the author's desire to write about his native Haiti but if that was going to be the case the book should not be presented as if it encompasses the much broader subject. The book "Lies My Teacher Told Me" treats this topic much better yet it fails short of digging into the political elements of the "modified history" we are taught in school; which was what I had hoped this book covered.I buy at least 50 books a year and this will be the first one I've ever returned for a refund. Half-way through it I was ready to toss it in the trash.
