This book is a great book. It definitely is very insightful and helps to deepen my knowledge of not only medical anthropology but how I should put things in addition to healthcare on so many much more perspectives. I have learned much from this book when using it in class and I would recommend anyone, even if you're not required to buy this book, to read this book because there are so many interesting chapters included in this book.

As far as textbooks go, this is an easy read. I used this book for a medical anthropology class along with three others. Due to a misunderstanding of the syllabus, I found myself 3 weeks (20 chapters behind) by the time I started this book. I had a major panic attack and thought there was no way I would be able to catch up in time for my first test given that textbooks are usually very boring and hard for me to focus on.Thank the heavens this book is actually very interesting. Each chapter is a different case study. I easily blew through 6 chapters a day and got caught up in a single weekend. I wish all of my textbooks were as interesting as this one.

chances are you're not buying/renting this book to read on your own on a chilly Saturday night. You're buying this book because you just enrolled in a medical anthropology course and there's a good chance, much like me, you have no idea what you're getting into. Well, in my case, I found the course to be very interesting and this book in particular was very through provoking. it covers a very wide range of topics and if I wasn't already enrolled as a computer science major, I may have considered switching majors. The book is great in other words, if you're worried about the course however, I can't help you there, but chances are you're going to learn a lot if you're not majoring in this subject.

I used this book as a textbook to teach a graduate level Med Anthro course. As a former student of Peter Brown, it was an obvious choice. Most of my students were physicians, nurses and dentists working on an MPH. I found it to be an excellent format, and the case studies were terrific "launch points" for lively discussions. Some material feels "dated", but overall it is a great introduction to the subject.

Lots of interesting, illustrative cases in this applied text. Very useful and full of good reminders about cultural relativism and knowledge, and how important both are in treating people of different cultures.

I used this for my undergrad medical anthro course.Like the other reviewer said, this book has absolutely no pictures or illustrations. It is just page after page of text. I mean, wouldn't it be easier to visualize a group of people or a disease if you at least had a picture to look at? For an undergrad course, I thought this book was difficult reading. There were a few selections that I read through and by the end I had no idea what I had just read about. Most of the selections are a few pages to about 10 pages but they are just so hard to read and understand. The language is definitely graduate level and some of the discussions are a bit over the top. It's actually not a traditional textbook but a selection of essays so this is probably why I did not notice any type of flow. I think this book would be a great supplement to a cultural anthropology course but I don't think using it alone to study medical anthropology is the way to go.My rating has nothing to do with the content as I am not an academic and I am not in a position to judge the selections. My review is strictly based on my opinion of this text having used it in a class as an undergrad student. If you have no problem reading dry books, then you might actually like this book. For the average person, I think this book is pretty tough and kinda boring.Buy it if you want. I give it three stars because it is so damn boring.

It was one of the more useful textbooks that I have had in a long time. Full of information that is good to know.

Very good book. I rented it for a class I had to take. It has really reallyy interesting case studies.
