Positives: good compilation of short essays; spans a wide array of gender-related topics; one of the more pleasurable books on cultural anthropology I've read lately; easy to understand (no complex statistical analysis or years of prereq work required for comprehension) and quickNegatives: seems a little bit disorganized in that some essays seemed to fit better under sections to which they were not assigned; the overall position of the essays chosen seem to be from the same perspective (and that perspective is not neutral, as one might expect) so the book feels imbalanced; and while the book covers a lot of gender-related issues, it leaves many out including perspectives on circumcision and gays in the militaryPerhaps the next edition will be able to include more updated essays on modern gender issues (pink boys, video game violence and young men, intactivism, male prostitution in Barbados, etc)
Good resource for gender studies class. All the essays are very interesting and eye-opening. Only thing I don't like are the chapter openings with all the info smashed up into one. Not very necessary.
I'm currently reading this for my Anthro class and it's so interesting. I bring it to work for my friends because they just love reading it!
