The Broadview Anthology Of British Literature: Volume 5: The Victorian Era (The Broadview Anthology Of British Literature, Volume 5) (Vol 5)

In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations throughout, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, offering additional perspectives both on individual texts and on larger social and cultural developments. Innovative, authoritative, and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature embodies a consistently fresh approach to the study of literature and literary history. The full Broadview Anthology of British Literature comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible at the Broadview Press website by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. The six individual bound volumes are also available in any combination at special package prices. Highlights of Volume 5: The Victorian Era include: the entire text of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, with all of the original illustrations; Alfred Lord Tennyson's In Memoriam A.H.H. in its entirety; and Augusta Webster's "A Castaway."

The worst English textbook publisher I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. The texts are printed on what feels like cheap comic book paper, which flutters with the slightest breeze and tears with the slightest mistake in handling. Ultimately stressful to own and maintain. The formatting is awful as well, with little thought put into readability, as texts are just jam-packed to the margins, presumably to save the already cheap paper.

I personally like the Norton's anthologyThe Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume E: The Victorian Age for my personal studies of Victorian Literature, but my PhD professor of Victorian studies uses this anthology, so it must be good.I do really like the pictures included in this anthology because art plays such a vital role in any society. If you want a good introduction to Victorian era/lit. this or the Norton anthology are good places to start.

in depth easy to read you get to know the authors well enough to be interested in reading more about them
