Used this book at Western Washington University in 2008. I think I'd probably enjoy reading this book now more than I did at the time. It's a really interesting glimpse into China in the early 20th century, but does require some context to really get into it. At the time, it was one of several readings in my Asian Studies class, so it was difficult to get into - but a good book overall.Like most people, I rely on honest product reviews to make purchase decisions. Because the experience of others has been so helpful to me, I try to provide honest, helpful reviews to assist other shoppers in selecting the right products for them. I hope my review has been helpful to you!
I needed this book for an Asian history class I took last summer and then again in a Chinese Literature class. It's a book that professors tend to enjoy teaching. It's a good read and gives details about the May Fourth Movement. I enjoyed it and glad it's part of my book collection.
Too slow . When it arrived we already finished the study of the book
If you don't have the historical or social context for this book, it may be difficult to understand. That being said, anyone interested in Chinese culture during the May 4th movement or just Chinese culture in general should read this book. It's one of my all time favorites.
I had higher expectations. The book I got was marked up and highlighted a lot, and I hate that. So this was not a good purchase for me. I'm not going to buy from this seller again.
this book is highly touted as a great example of mao dun's socialist realism. well even if it is, i didn't much care for it. i found the heroine to be really irritating, and just her whole experience wasn't something i found myself very interested in. if it weren't for the fact that i had to read this book for class, than i highly doubt i would have finished it. even so, it's not altogether bad or anything, it's just not my thing. hence the review of 3 stars. also, just to note, i don't really like modern Chinese literature as a whole. that may have something to do with why i didn't like this work very much.
