When it comes to studying for AP tests that require you to memorize a bunch of facts (U.S. History, Chemistry, Government, etc.), the REA Crash Course is the way to go. AP English Literature and Composition, however, is an entirely different sort of test in that you are tested on your reading and writing capabilities, and neither of these can be properly honed just by reading this book. Most of it is pure common sense, and the information I did learn from this book about literary time periods, rhetorical strategies, and the like was not useful in any way on the actual exam. This book had absolutely no practice reading passages in it; rather, it just suggested that you read more in general. My advice: get a review book with multiple practice exams in it and don't waste your time memorizing long lists of literary terms.
As a student preparing for the AP English Lit and Comp test in the spring, this book has been a great resource for me. This book, unlike some other guides I have looked at, was written to be read by a student; it is easy to read, practical, and explains things in terms that make sense to me. These are a few things that I found most useful in this guide:* A literary timeline, showing the common beliefs of each period and the works and authors included in the literary period* A concise summary of the plot, setting, and characters of works frequently cited on the AP test* A detailed explanation of the six literary elements (diction, imagery, tone, syntax, p.o.v., and figurative language) along with strategies to identify them and how a author uses them* Key terms of fiction, poetry, drama, and language that will be seen on the AP test* A guide to writing essays: how to create a strong thesis, what to look for in the prompt, how they are scored, and a sample of a successful essayThis guide compliments what I am learning in the classroom, and since we don't have textbooks, it is a helpful tool to focus myself on what I need to learn this year. The AP test is a very intimidating task, but this book gave me a very clear idea of what will be on the test, and it makes studying for the test seem much more manageable. I would recommend this guide as both a tool to use on a day-to-day basis in the classroom, as well as a last minute review before "the big day
You've been in AP English all year. We know what happened -- some of the books were boring. Some of the poems made no sense. Your teacher kept talking about details until you just stopped listening. But now the test is just a month away, and alarm bells are ringing. You reviewed all your notes, but you're not sure you're ready. This is the book for you.Veteran AP teacher Dawn Hogue knows how the AP English Literature test works. She has gathered everything you need to understand what will be expected. What questions will they ask? What do some of those terms mean? What do they really want in those writing prompts? Should I use fancy words if I'm not sure what they mean? You'll find answers here. This very readable book -- long on lists, short on dense prose -- can help students determine what they're already good at and what they might want to focus on in the weeks leading up to the test. It reassures and challenges.Teachers who are new to teaching AP will find this book useful as they establish curriculum. Fluency in taking the test is as much a key to success as fluency in analyzing a text; we must teach both sets of skills. This book outlines the skills students will need. It also includes lists of frequently-mentioned works. It even includes models of annotated texts.Teachers who are already familiar with Hogue's work (mshogue.com) will know what to expect: this book empowers students to take control of their learning. Its simplicity belies hours of research and preparation. I can't imagine teaching an AP class without this resource.
Living up to its name 'Crash Course' - this test-prep book is concise and well organized. As an AP Literature teacher, this book is the perfect aid in preparing for the last few weeks of class before the exam. The author provides an analytical approach to refining essay writing, an outline for extracting the most important parts of literary works, and strategies for close reading on the exam. The author condenses a year's course by emphasizing only the most important content on the exam and providing 'test tips' to practice important skills for taking the writing and multiple choice sections of the exam. For the student studying on her own, the author provides definitions of key elements of literature, summaries of novels and plays that appear frequently on the exam, and the link to REA's free practice exam. This book is completely instructional. It makes the AP Literature exam accessible to anyone willing to work on their approaches to reading and writing.
Hogue's crash course is full of much needed knowledge for the AP literature student. The chapters delineate clear categories of ideas, which can sometimes be hard for students to tell apart. The way the book is organized makes a great deal of sense, and helps students break studying down into manageable pieces. Rather than just a book full of practice tests and answers (though those are supplied as well), this text is incredibly instructional while also being readable all the way--it's clear that a real life AP teacher wrote the guide. Hogue anticipates questions and addresses them with easy-to-understand examples. For me (a teacher approaching AP Literature and Composition for the first time this year), this book has been a great at-a-glance reminder for the terminology I need to cover with my kids. The essay pointers section has also been particularly helpful for my students, many of whom have never done the type of writing they are now being asked to do in this course. The AP English Literature and Composition Crash Course is, for them, a chart in a vast sea of rigorous new thinking, reading, and writing tasks.Thank you from the Midwest!
