I've been a huge fan of pretty much all the Nat. Geo Atlases. This one comes up short in my opinion. I simply don't care for the way it's set up. For instance, it's not necessarily chronological, it dissects tribes by regions. Furthermore, because of the time frame when the English had begun Colonizing North America....We miss out on whom the French, Spanish & Dutch had interactions with. I feel as if the East Coast, aside from the Cherokee & the Seminole, had been simply glazed over.

I thought this book was fantastic. I was never aware of just how many Indian nations actually existed. As a history teacher we, of course, focused on westward migration by those who displaced the native populations. I was aware of the Indian nations near us, but as for many others, I was relatively uneducated. Treuer has done a pretty good job of listing and explaining the different tribes. For those like me, whose knowledge of native American populations might be on the scant side, this book is magnificent. For those that want to put more emphasis on particular tribes or groups, maybe it is a little light in spots. Fantastic book highlighting the facts that have led to the demise of many of these proud people. Diseases, imperialism, and westward migration. From National Geographic, which automatically makes it above and beyond the average publication. A sad story for some, but some glimpses of hope for the future for others. Showcases North American Indians, so Canada is also included. Might have been a little light on Mexican tribes, I guess.

This is a very well illustrated compilation of native peoples in the western hemisphere. However, it is very limited as to depth of coverage for each native nation, tribe, or band. It is best used as an introduction to stimulate further investigation and study.

A really good and important publication. It is well organized, authentic, and informative. My only criticism is that the type size is very small on many of the pages, making it hard to read - especially some sections printed on a tinted background.

Very well written. Anyone doing research will find this very helpful in tracking the travels of the tribes in connectionwith the movement of our pioneering families. We have nothing definative yet but this book is helping to track them. At the same time this family was moving about, was about the same time the tribes were being relocated or forced out. I highly recommend this book for this purpose. Our Native American brothers & sisters, respected the land, & for the most part lived simple but fullfilling lives. Their everyday items of living are works of art. I admire & wish I had the same skill, to make such beautiful things as they did & still do.

nice book bought it as a gift for my dad. he couldn't put it down! but he is big into that stuff so.

La "BIBLE" sur les Nations Indiennes. Un livre à avoir pout tout savoir, ou presque, sur les Amérindiens. Excellent!

Yes, this is an awesome book. It was a gift for my mother and she can't put it down. Excellent quality. A must buy.
