I bought four atlases from Penguin recently. This one, New Penguin Altas of Ancient History (McEvedy), N.Pen. Atlas of Medieval His. (McEvedy), and The Pen. Historical Atlas of Ancient Rome (Scarre). They are all thin and small (under 150 pages and around 10" x 7".This was the best of all four.I found the articles and maps to be very good. This was the first atlas I found to show exactly how Meso-American Empires were related.I also liked the coverage of the ancient Middle East. I love to read history and this book had new stuff I hadn't found. And it is nice to have it all in one place (might have taken me weeks or months to find all of this on the Internet).Very happy with this book
Okay,I got this book as a gift. It covers quite a bit of history in a small book. More of a starting off point for further research with other books. The photos and maps are very nice however. Most of the other books on history I looked at lacked such nice colorful images and maps.I did find one error so far, page 102, the Greek City States chapter. I was all into reading the story of the Spartan-Athens victory over the Persians in 480-479 but at the very bottom of the page the sentence does not finish."""Their victory is generally recognized as marking the beginning of the Classical age of """"I figured it would continue on the opposite page, however that page starts a new chapter. Kind of a dissapointment. Age of what????!!!! Now I'll never know. Haha!I'll still look into buying The Penguin Historical Atlas of Rome and Greece only because of the nice pictures and maps.
As an atlas, maps feature prominently in this slim overview, and they are very good -- interesting, informative, and well-designed. Ancient Mesopotamia gets the most attention, deservedly so, though ancient civilizations on all continents (except Australia) receive good introductory treatment. This is a slim volume, and lacks depth, but for what it is -- an atlas and an introduction -- it is first-rate. The maps really make the book. My only quibble, a minor one, is that a more extensive bibliography would have been helpful. Highly recommended.
Wonderful overview and introduction to the cultures of ancient civilization. Of note is the inclusion of the "ancient" mesoamerican cultures from the 13th-14th centuries. (...some books fore go these cultures due entirely to European chronology.) Split into 5 parts each distinct culture receives a couple of paragraphs explaining their origins and high points. The author mostly focuses on the geographic and military realities while acknowledging intellectual and agricultural breakthroughs. As noted in other reviews the maps and presentation are outstanding! I love the color, cover, size, paper quality, text, and font of this book. You can't go wrong for $13. This is the best place to start before reading whole texts dedicated to the Sumerians, et al.
I had to order this book for an Ancient Civilizations class I am taking. It is really amazing. It has tons of detailed information including maps of each area/civilization and is highly organized. Although I had to get this for school- I will be holding onto it as a valuable reference book!! Penguin is such quality anyways- but as a very impressed student, I thought I would leave a review.
If you're like me, then you need things as simple as maps in order to help clarify which empires and peoples were organized geographically, throughout history. This is a great overview of historical periods and ancient groups of people. This not a great, in-depth historical tool depending on what you're looking for, but even if you're a professional historian you can greatly benefit and use the maps and information presented.Go grab a copy.
This book is food for ancient history lovers, history buffs and historians. I read and write a lot of historical articles and books. Dr. John Haywood is an expert in creating Historical Atlases. I always use Dr. John Haywood’s material and maps for my writings. I always have some disagreement on historical dates and sequence of some events with Dr. Haywood; however, I do consider him a scholar and a worthy historian. Read my reviews and see how many of his out of print historical atlases are in my library. This man has truly done much for the education and knowledge of history and geography to the students and related enthusiasts. This particular book is well crafted, well written and well organized. It is loaded with photos, photo descriptions, quotes from the ancient historical figures in bold fonts, informing texts and a great number of well designed colored maps. Every page has photos, maps or both. The paper used is nice quality glossy paper, no cheap paper here! I like the way he designed the format of the book. Each corner is well organized and easy to comprehend for the beginners and a thrill to review for the advanced ancient history lovers. The book is loaded with information on Persian, Greek, Roman, Egyptian and other ancient cultures and empires which are my food. Maps are well designed, colorful and comprehensive. If you are a beginner history student, this book is made for you. If you are an advanced student of history, you can use this book as reference. If you are a historian such as myself, you will enjoy reading and viewing the maps on this document. So far, I have not seen Dr. John Haywood write and publish garbage. When you see a book or a Historical Atlas is written by Dr. John Haywood, you can have a peace of mind to purchase it and rest assured that you are in good hands. If it’s Haywood, it’s worth reading and adding to your library.
