Forgive my ignorance and the rating of 4 stars, but other people may make the same mistake. I realize this is an "atlas" of the instruments, but I suppose I still expected to see some information about them, too. It is not completely void of information, but you should really buy it for the pictures and fundamental understanding of their existence.

Got this for my musical wife - we're both musicians. Was concerned that maybe lots of the odd types would not be listed. They're all there! It's a fun, exhaustive list of musical instrument families. Many historical models are listed and there's lots of related information. Quite a lot of work went into this tome. Highly recommended as an excellent general reference for musical instruments. More than worth the price!

My musical 16 year old wanted this book. It is substantial in size, and filled with beautiful instrument images. He gleaned a lot of information by reading this book, and had exposure to new instruments.
