World Atlas Of Pirates: Treasures And Treachery On The Seven Seas--In Maps, Tall Tales, And Pictures

By combining stunning cartography with engaging and authoritative text, The World Atlas of Pirates presents the story of piracy in a completely new way. Eighty maps plot the routes that pirates followed―whether crossing the world's great oceans or pursuing their prey through creeks and bays. Colorful archive illustrations, including photographs and images from England's National Maritime Museum and other historic collections, bring the villains, their ships, and their victims to life. Lively, accessible text by pirate expert Angus Konstam explains how piracy grew and flourished from the early buccaneers to the rogues of popular legends, how it has been snuffed out, and how it has reared its head again with the machine-gun-toting pirates operating on today's high seas.

I was looking for a book about pirates with comparatively large letters, nice pictures and maps, so I can read it with my grandchildren. This is the best book I found according to my requirements. Thank you!

Loved this book about Pirates. It seems fairly factual considering how difficult it must be to find accurate reports of events so far in the distant past. After all history is written/recorded by humans and the accounts are through their eyes and may or may not be accurate, how could one know for sure?I perused this book along with;"The Real Story of the PIRATE" by A. Hyatt Verrill. That worked out well as the World Atlas had great charts and photos that enhanced the entire experience.Another reviewer had mentioned that The R S of the Pirate was written in the style of (and read like) a novel, that was my impression as well and The R S of the Pirate was most enjoyable to read.Together both of these works made learning about Pirates very pleasant.I highly recommend both [especially in conjunction with each other].

I really enjoyed this book. I think it's very important to take away the romanticized version of a pirate and just stick to the facts. I love the pictures and maps, I think it adds a nice element, not childish just very complementary to the author's writing. As a young boy and now adult who has been fascinated with pirates I can enjoy the Hollywood and popular imagination versions of pirates, but as a history buff I really appreciate facts and this doesn't disappoint.

Interesting, expansive, and a great reference to some of the greatest marine archaeology and salvage being conducted by professionals all over the world. As I follow the exploits of Barry Clifford, NOAA and others on the internet, I keep this reference at hand. Loved It!

Wow! I had no idea there were so many pirates in the world. I have read and heard about the famous pirates so I found this book so very interesting with so many more names added to what I already knew. Very well done book!

There is no doubt about this book; the author is very direct, he tells the reader in the very beginning that Pirates aren't like Jack Sparrow. There's pictures of paintings, dates, and maps. If you're interested or studying pirates this is the book for you.

Got this as an anniversary present from my husband. The illustrations are great and is very informative.

The book is fun to read. Overall the book is OK, but there are some issues. The most obvious and clearly objective issues relate to the maps:Page 58 has a map that indicates that there was a place in the middle of Nicaragua called Fort San Juan, which is not discussed in the text so it isn't evident why anyone bothered to place it on the map. However, there was no such place in the middle of Nicaragua. There is an interesting place in Nicaragua on the San Juan River at the southern border of Nicaragua called the Fortaleza del Castillo de la Inmaculada Concepción, which is very interesting in the history of pirates. The story of the castillo is much more interesting than many of the other things in the book. The map on page 132 labels Nicaragua as Honduras. The map on page 156 indicates that Belize is located where Bluefields, Nicaragua is located. There are arrows on the map to and from this falsely labeled Belize. One doesn't know whether the arrows are correct and the label is wrong or whether both the arrows and the label are wrong. There is text that goes with the location in question, which also indicates that the place in question is Belize. Belize is not even next to Nicaragua. In fact, it is not next to any country that is next to Nicaragua. Does this really matter? Maybe not to most people, but it certainly does matter to anyone who has lived in Nicarauga or Belize and especially to anyone who has lived in Bluefields, which has Dutch piracy in its history and which history would have been a valuable addition to the book.Because of these errors in the maps, it is evident that the facts in the book were not checked carefully and so the credibility of the book as a whole is called into question in spite of the otherwise good reputation of the author.Although there are picture credits in the book, there are no references.
