The Ninth Edition is an update on the previous (2008) State of the World Atlas. Most of the themes explored between the two are similar, but as another commenter notes, the graphic representations are much reduced. Most of the maps used in the new edition are simplified and stylized, and in many cases no maps are used at all. Some of the maps (for example, the GDP per capita and adult literacy maps) are symbols on an otherwise blank white page, which makes it harder - not easier - to understand the information visually presented. Other subjects such as world tourism similarly use the size and shape of fonts to substitute for maps on otherwise blank pages, which is quite puzzling considering that very visually engaging graphics and maps were used to cover the same subjects in the previous edition. I'm not sure why it was considered necessary to give the updated information a "fresh' take, and why a lack of clarity was considered the fresh way to go. I would recommend users to stick with the eighth edition.
I have used three different editions (7th, 8th and 9th) of Dan Smith's State of the World Atlas with middle school students the past several years. The books are a wonderful collection of thematic maps that provide a wealth of information about the world. I recommend them to any teacher covering current world affairs, culture or geography. One disturbing trend I am noticing, though, is a marked, decreasing visual appeal in each successive edition. The 7th edition maps were witty, creative and fun. The current 9th edition is, comparatively, much drier, unimaginative and sterile. The strong graphic component was what first drew me and my students into these atlases. I am sorry to see that emphasis slipping away.
The best of its kind! Dan Smith done it again! Book load of maps, colorful graphics, statistics, data, information, charts and status maps. The atlas is loaded with information which you must search the whole net to gather in one place. I am an obsessive compulsive perfectionist. I am also a history and geography buff. I ache for statistics and information. This atlas passed my inspection and I put a seal of approval on it. I read and write a lot of history and geography. I use these types of statistics in my books and articles. As an author and journalist I love to get my hands on such statistics and colorful maps which has been displayed beautifully. The atlas is drawn and written in a way that even a beginning student or an average person with average knowledge would comprehend it and enjoy it.I strongly recommend this atlas to all the historians, geographers, statistics enthusiasts, information junkies, data freaks and map buffs. I also recommend this atlas to specifically students and beginner statistics enthusiasts. This book is a great source of general knowledge about your world and everything in it. Political, historical, military, geography, data, statistics, population, and all types of information, they are all in there. I truly enjoyed reading it and analyzing the maps. As a matter of fact, right now it is in my SUV sand from time to time, I review it and enjoy it.
Yes, this book has met and exceeded my expectations. However, I could have received it earlier but I did get it on the last day of the shipment due date.
Has some interesting maps and info graphics but nothing incredible or even new.
Super fast shipping! Item was exactly as described!
Very well illustrated in easy-to-understand format.
