This is an important book about living well. Every one of us will face sickness and death, our own and that of everyone we know. The medical-industrial complex in the United States has metastasized into something that can sometimes treat and sometimes cure, but almost never cares for patients. This book is part of a large and growing conversation about how we can better use our resources to provide compassionate care for all of us.
Anatole France said, "Until you have had the love of an animal in your life, part of your soul remains unawakened." I was reminded of this quote when reading the invigorating, informative and affecting book "Awake at the Bedside." After you read this book, it's not death that will seem inevitable, but life. I am awake and grateful. I loved this book.
Consider this one a resource for times of loss, love and living. You can read this cover to cover or flip around for a reminder of life's preciousness and the opportunities loss offers. There's an eclecticism of many voices and it feels like every read will offer new layers. It's moving while also being practical. I recommend it to caregivers, those grieving and anyone who appreciates asking the great question of life and death.
This book is a must read in the filed of health care. When someone asks for a book that educates about dealing with end of life issues from both a patient and caregiver perspective this is the THE book. Written with kindness and compassion it educates and enlightens.
This book is your companion! It will tell you a lot about love and care. It's a must read, especially in times like ours! The idea of putting together all these honest and beautiful texts, poems, and thoughts, is brilliant. It's a book to read and reread!
People often ask, "How can you DO end-of-life work?" This beautiful book not only providesan eloquent answer, but also illuminates the ways that practice can inform and enhance boththe grace of dying and caring for the sick and dying.
Very informative with good guidance. I have been with our local, Not For Profit Hospice, as a Volunteer and Speaker/Ambassador for multiple years and enjoy reading of experiences from others that are involved with 'end of life' patients/families. The emotional rewards are unexplainable but cherished.
This is a terrific book. Inspiring, joyful and filled with warmth and compassion that supports our life and opens our view of inevitable transitions -- our own as well as our loved ones. Check it out!!!!
