Walking With Ghosts: Poems (Earthworks)

Written from a contemporary Cherokee, Queer and mixed-race experience, these poems confront a legacy of land-theft, genocide, and forced removal, and resist ongoing attacks on both Indigenous and Gay/ Lesbian/ Bisexual /Transgender communities. Tender, startling, confrontational and erotic, this book honors the dead and brings the survivors back home.

These poems contain a good deal of anger and remind one of the late 1960's and the AIM movement. But why shouldn't there be anger? The same injustice toward Indians and gays continues today. You will also find in the book tender love poems and rituals of healing and putting to rest for those the author has seen hurt or lost. There is also sardonic humor. Read, learn, and enjoy.

I've had the privilege of seeing Qwo-Li read several times in Seattle. Hir work is groundbreaking and inspiring. This book is a thought-provoking, oppression-ending read -- Powerful on all accounts.

Driskill writes with profound thoughtfulness and beautiful, haunting imagery. Hir works are sprinkled with powerful cultural symbols. Some of these poems touch on difficult political topics, and evocative enough to bring tears. I absolutely recommend this title to any poetry lover.

The entire Earthworks series is groundbreaking--Driskill's contribution stands out as a fiercely political, unflinching, yet tender collection from an emerging talent. Strong imagery and tight composition leave no doubts that Driskill is one to watch. Very highly recommended.

The author of this book doesn't have a drop of American Indian blood in him.
