Effective Online Teaching: Foundations And Strategies For Student Success

Effective Online Teaching is an essential resource that offers a clear understanding of how cognition and learning theory applies to online learning. This much-needed resource provides specific strategies for incorporating this knowledge into effective learner-centered teaching that gets results. The book includes strategies on motivation, tailored instruction, interaction, collaboration, monitoring and communication, time and information management, student concerns, and legal and ethical issues. Designed as a text for online instructors, the chapters can be used for self-directed learning or in a formal training setting in concert with the companion Training Manual and CD. "Tina Stavredes has done something sorely needed in the online teaching world —she has successfully combined solid theory and research with the practical application of instructor training. Both the book and the training manual are a 'must' for any online education organization. Bravo!"—Dr. Darcy W. Hardy, assistant vice provost for Technology Education Initiatives, University of Texas at San Antonio, and chair emerita, United States Distance Learning Association "Drawing from years of experience and solidly grounded in an understanding of the adult learner and learning, Stavredes offers dozens of helpful instructor strategies, activities, and resources to support adult learners' success in an online environment. Effective Online Teaching and its accompanying training manual is a 'must-have' set for online instructors in higher education, corporate, and government settings."—Sharan B. Merriam, professor emeritus of adult education, University of Georgia, and coauthor, Learning in Adulthood "An eminently practical book that provides clear and unpretentious explanations of the learning theories that are essential knowledge for every online teacher, together with equally uncluttered and easy-to-follow guidance about how to apply this knowledge to achieve excellent teaching."—Michael Grahame Moore, Distinguished Professor of Education, The Pennsylvania State University, and editor, The American Journal of Distance Education

I picked this textbook up at a conference, listened to the author speak about her book and her work, and cannot recommend this highly enough. Whether you are an academic administrator, an educator, a tenured faculty member with years of experience, or the new "adjunct on the block," this book was written with your needs in mind. The unique combination of a clear eyed view of the needs of the student and of faculty, along with a best practices educational psychology perspective makes this book an essential read for everyone whose decisions make a difference in the lives of students. A must read, period. No matter what page I turn to in this book, I find a perspective and a calm wisdom that has me nodding in agreement. There is a companion workbook that includes a cd-rom, also by the same author (I have not obtained that yet, but plan to). Start your semester, whether you are teaching online or not (the book is a handbook of pedagogy, not merely another book about online teaching) with this text... at once transformative and essential. (note to publisher--- change the cover, I saw this on a table at the conference in Madison WI this week, and passed it by specifically because of the cover... I picked it up because Tina's presentation sounded interesting, and was it ever!)

This book is simple and easy to read. Those are its good points. However, it is overly simplistic, provides few concrete examples, is highly repetitive, and is written in the worst kind of education buzzword-jargon. The few concrete examples that are provided assume a narrow educational philosophy: education as business. This is not surprising, considering she works for (for-profit) Capella University.

High five for Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success. Stavredes has filled the book with goodies to help online instructors assist learners in maximizing the online learning experience. The book contains practical strategies that are well grounded in theory. The strategies promote positive interaction between instructor and student, while supporting learners in becoming intrinsically motivated, self-directed, critical thinkers. The book is organized in an easy to follow format that can be read from front to back or can be read by topic. The book also includes templates that can be easily recreated or adapted for individual use. Effective Online Teaching: Foundation and Strategies for Student Success is a survival guide for online instruction. No online teacher should be without a copy. ~ Laura Sullivan

Effective Online Teaching: Foundations and Strategies for Student Success by Dr. Tina Stavredes is a must read for all online instructors with its blend of psychological theory on learning, cognition and motivation, its dynamic strategies for engaging, scaffolding, and assessing students and its practical information on adult learners, netettiquette, and how-to for managing behavioral issues. This is the Primer for faculty new to teaching online! Stavredes' book is a helpful tool for experienced online faculty with its sample worksheets, rubrics, and discussion postings standards. Had this book been available at the start of my 10 year online teaching career, it would have had a prime location on my desk, next to my laptop and texts for the course!

This book is very readable and gives a good introduction to effective online teaching. This book is appropriate for those new to online teaching as well as experienced online teachers.

I'm writing a course to help faculty transition from the face-to-face environment to the online environment. This is one of the two textbooks that I chose. Each part summarizes a wealth of information that one might have to acquire from reading several books or a lot of journal articles. And the Exhibits are first class models of eLearning best practices. But if you buy this book for no other reason, do it for Chapter 16, which is one of the best write-ups I've read for managing behavioral issues in the online classroom.

Three online schools later...thank you for writing this! This is something we needed a very long time ago and more of my colleagues should read it. Teachers spend too much time trying to adapt the brick and mortar styles to online teaching...they need to get on board with this book. Thank you!
