Vocabulary is the corner stone of good reading and writing. Many smart kids cannot raise their reading level because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved over a short period. Young kids need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It organizes essential third grade words in 24 lessons, and teaches them with activities and drills. Its well-designed questions help to clarify the related words that kids often misuse otherwise. The word selection is thoughtful and suitable for 3rd grade level. My child used it for learning as well as for assessment. He finished it in 2 months. For further word practice, I found Beestar weekly ELA program has more such drills (a nice web site at [...] My child's vocabulary is improved effectively with these word lessons. His reading and writing level is rising at the same time. A solid book!
My son, who is not really interested in Language Arts, but is good at it, got very interested in this book. He would ask to do vocabulary and more vocabulary. This book makes learning vocabulary fun even though it's through repetition. Each lesson contains many pages of the same words but in different ways and it gets kids into vocabulary and learning new words happily!I highly recommend this book!
As a mother of six who has been homeschooling for 17 years, I highly recommend this workbook. My 12-year-old daughter loves it, because it is interesting and informative. I like it because it is challenging, but doable. Each lesson is three pages long, and my daughter does one a day. Answers are in the back, so it's super easy to correct. I would highly recommend this workbook. My daughter already had an excellent vocabulary, but this is a great addition to her curriculum and has taught us BOTH many new words.
If your child needs to review vocabulary or if you are a homeschooler I recommend this series. We've used them and have been very pleased with the word groups and the lesson content. It has helped to improve my son's vocabulary and spelling as well as helped with reading comprehension b/c of his expanded vocabulary.
This is not designed as a homeschooling curriculum, but it works great for that purpose. It's precisely what I wanted. There are 3 pages per Lesson, which works well for a three-day-a-week study. I also like the little writing exercise each lesson includes, such a writing a letter, making an ad for a toy, making a postcard, etc., using the vocabulary words. The words are well-grouped; synonyms, compound, word roots, etc. Recommended highly for homeschooling or to supplement a child in school.
I learned about this book from Beestar online vocabulary program for kids. Vocabulary is the foundation for good reading and writing. Many smart kids don't do well in reading because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary cannot be achieved quickly. Young students need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great help. It gives thorough practice through the use of synonyms, antonyms, compound words, homophones, homographs, plurals, etc., to ensure that your child will learn the meanings of the words used in each section. Through a variety of exercises that vary within and between each section, a child will become familiar with not only the word's meaning, but also the meaning of each type of word (i.e., synonym, homophone, etc). Little by little, this book built the word power for my child without stressing. Now his reading level is at the top of his class. His confidence is high. This book is an excellent tool for after-school enrichment.
I bought this book after being frustrated with the lack of vocabulary my children have in the classroom. After speaking with my child's teacher about the lack of weekly vocabluary, and that the children were OBVIOUSLY not going to get this in the public school....I decided to buy this book to use as an at-home tool for my 6th grader (I also bought the 3rd grade version for my younger child). Each lesson has 10 vocab words with definitions, and then 5-6 activities to complete using these words. I first review the definitions with my child and give an example of how it might be used in a sentence. I then let her complete the activities and check them before she goes on to the next one. Depending on the activities, it may take about 15-20 minutes to complete the lesson. She seems more confident with word meaning and this should help with reading comprehension as well. I have been really happy with the book so far and only wish I had started these books earlier. I highly recommend this series.
If you are looking for a great word study book that not only gives you great reproducibles moreover it gives you great ideas on how to extend your word study lessons. I use this book with my 8th grade ELA classes and they actually have been applying the words to their writing.
