The Continuum Of Literacy Learning, Grades PreK-8, Second Edition: A Guide To Teaching

Click here for information on the NEW Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition This edition will be available for sale through August 2016. Where other assessment and benchmark systems leave you wondering "Now what?" Fountas and Pinnell have provided a link from assessment to instruction via proven classroom practices such as guided reading and read aloud. This book contains seven continua. Each continuum focuses on an area of the language arts curriculum. Six continua provide grade level expectations and are designed for planning group instruction. The seventh, the Guided Reading continuum, is organized by Fountas and Pinnell level from A to Z and correlates directly with the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System levels. The continua provide specific descriptions of the texts that students read, listen to, write, and perform. In addition, each continuum lists specific behaviors and understandings that are required at each level for students to demonstrate thinking within, beyond, and about the text. These behaviors and understandings describe what students will be expected to do in order to effectively read and understand the text. As the world of literacy changes, we also see some important changes in the acquisition of literacy across grade levels. The second edition of The Continuum of Literacy Learning has been adjusted to reflect those changes. First, the preschools of today are different from those of five years ago; so a Pre-Kindergarten set of continua has been added to the Pre-K -8 and Pre-K-2 versions of this book. This Pre-Kindergarten continuum does not represent "moving" the first grade curriculum down. Instead, it presents a rich array of understandings relative to oral language, story telling, and playful print awareness to provide a strong foundation for Kindergarten learning. The basic detailed descriptions of behaviors and understandings to notice, teach, and support for grades K through 8 remain the same; but in this new edition of the seven continua, we have added new challenges such as the effective processing of graphic texts and novels. We have also examined carefully the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) framework for 2009-2010 and made changes in some of the ways behaviors and understandings are expressed. Additionally, we have strengthened the expectation to recognize and effectively process genres that are embedded within other genres (hybrid texts-for example a letter, diary entries, or newspaper articles within fictional narratives). The continuum has also been adjusted in response to current research as well as to a great deal of information related to the implementation of assessment in schools. Finally, the continuum has a new design that makes it easier to read and interpret. Also check out our new on-demand mini-course: Thinking and Talking About Books Across the Day.

This is one of the best books for teaching reading in the classroom. The entire book is useful, giving detailed information about students' reading, writing, speaking and listening development, etc. But it's the back of the book that blew me away! Text complexity for each guided reading level is described, along with ideas for word work, and reading behaviors to prompt, teach, and reinforce.

The book is an excellent resource for any teacher who deals with literacy, but also a tremendous help for special education teachers who need help finding just the right Reading and Literacy objectives for IEPs and RTI issues. I highly recommend this book!

I use the Continuum of Literacy all the time! If you teach guided reading, this is a must-have! Ideas for word work, reading behaviors and strategies are targeted at every level A-Z. I use it for intervention as a guide to what should be taught and mastered.

This is my "bible" for teaching literacy. It can be read cover-to-cover, or pulled out for quick reference when needed. I'm re-designing my lesson plans for guided reading and word work based on this book. It presents all pedagogical information in such a logical way. I really appreciate how it breaks down what to expect of students at each instructional reading level - and what their next steps should be.

I was given a copy by my school district as it was the model for literacy they use. However, I found myself needing it at home at times when I was doing small group planning and decision-making. It was helpful to have my own copy with me to make those decisions.

I used this book during my student teaching and loved it so much that I decided to buy a copy for myself. Since I have a special education degree I got the PreK through 8th grade version to help with reading groups, should I need it. I love how it spells out what you can do for work work with students and skills to help students move to the next reading level. Such a great book, especially if you have been trained on the Fountas and Pinnell system.

Love the contents of the book, but hate 's 30 day return policy. Did not start reading this right away as meant as a summer project, but when I went looking for particular bit of info, opened the book and lost the entire first two sections. Now- each time I open it, I lose more pages. Can't ask for a replacement since past the 30 days.If you need help with balanced literacy, get this book! Just check the binding as soon as you receive it.

Helpful for all teachers of reading. Reall yuseful information about the different models of reading instruction. A nice summer reading for teachers.
