These games are great for using and practicing maths skills in a context in which there is some real motivation to do so. I love how they provide opportunities to explore a wide variety of approaches, including number bonds and logical thinking. There is also some thoughtful advice and ideas on mathematics education which I am glad to be reminded of, even though I have read Ms Gaskin's thoughts on these topics many times before on her wonderful blog! The games use very simple materials, mostly cards and dice, and the few boards that are needed are provided. Each game also has tips on how to customise or extend it - maybe for players of different abilities, or non-competitive options. My children are always pleased, even excited, when I suggest one of these games, even ones that seem terribly simple like Tens Concentration. Sometimes they even ask to play them unprompted!I have both books on Kindle, and really I would prefer a hard copy as it would be easier to keep handy, mark, and refer to during play. So get the paperbacks if you can!
I was already a fan of Denise Gaskins' book Let's Play Math, and Math You Can Play Combo certainly did not disappoint, either. In fact, both books are at the top of my math list, along with Family Math and The I Hate Mathematics Book. Although the cover says games for young learners, the beauty of this book is that most of the games can easily be scaled up for older kids, teens, and even adults. My youngest is four and my oldest is 14, and I will be pulling games for all of them out of this book! I appreciate that most of the games are low floor, high ceiling - easy for a child to access, but can be played at a higher level through strategy or slight alterations to the rules. It is jam packed with content. I am teaching a math co-op for homeschoolers this year, and there are enough games and variations in here to last not only this school year, but more to come. These are not drills disguised as games, but activities that require problem solving and strategy as well as calculation. If you are a homeschooler, you need this book. If you are a parent of a reluctant math learner, you need this book. If your family enjoys games played with easy materials such as playing cards, you need this book. Yes, you need this book!
I bought this to use in our homeschool this year with my first grader and my preschooler. We've already been enjoying the games in the Addition and Subtraction book. Most of the games require only a deck of cards and require no preparation on my part. I just pull it up on my Kindle, glance through the directions and we play.
I play a lot of math games with my children. This year I'm playing with even more children because I'm facilitating a math games class at our homeshcool co-op. Denise Gaskins' books are excellent additions to our math games library. I appreciate how encouraging they are, in addition to being chock-full of excellent (and simple!) games to add to our repertoire. I highly recommend both of these titles.
A resource every classroom and teacher should have. Making learning fun, is the aim of these books.
Great activities for young children. Well written and nice visuals.
great for my little brother who does not like math work books.
Haven't had time to use yet, I'll put it in the middle.
