I purchased these student atlases for my 3rd grade class. Theyrefer to themselves as "Mapheads", because they are enthralledwith geography, and I thought it would be the perfect gift. The bookswere handed out during the party, and immediately following theripping of paper, and the "Oohs and Ahhs" there was absolute silence asthey dove into the books. After about 5 minutes of hearing only thesound of turning pages, I began to hear, "Look on page ___, all theflags of the world are there", and "Look what the earth looked likebefore it separated into continents!" It is January, and they are stillwilling to give up recess to scour these atlases. These books are easy to navigate, the illustrations are clear, and thecharts are very well done. Although this atlas is for older students, these 8 and 9 year olds were able to glean information easily, and theywill be able to use them into middle and high school. It was money well spent.
My 12 year old granddaughter introduced me to this atlas. She said it was part of her school work. The detail information and numerous maps were outstanding. I bought one for myself. Some evenings I simply sit with the atlas and, for an hour or so, become totally involved with its contents. It is not just for kids.Just look inside the book here at and you will see how informative this 132 page atlas really is.
This atlas addresses the curiosity of those from 4 to 104. It is presented in a very eye appealing manner with colorful maps and an abundance of information. What is included are geographic features, political boundaries, as well as geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics. I wouldnt suggest this atlas for those with a need for thoroughly comprehensive information but for the rest of us, it is both adequate and enjoyable.
This atlas is very limited in maps of the world. It is helpful for miscellaneous information but not as an atlas, i.e. a book of world maps.
This identifies itself as a "student" atlas. That is an accurate description, and the "student" would be junior high or early high school student. There are political maps, geographic maps, oceanagraphic maps, and many special theme maps, showing climate conditions, natural resources, population density, and other information. There is also a wealth of information on flags, concentration of major religious groups, languages, and quite a few other things that I would not necssarily look for in an atlas. BUT, it is more of an almanac than a real atlas. It's major failing is that it is organized by continent, and therefore is not a good reference for details of smaller areas. If you want to find small island in the Mediterranean Sea, for instance, it might be on the Africa map or the Europe map, or maybe even the Asia map, but none are detaled enough to see small areas, so it might not be identified in a useful way at all. Likewise for other areas. So, it's good as a general reference, but if you really want to see the political or geographic details of smaller areas, or the relationship of areas to each other, you'll need something better.
My mom has dementia and lives in an assisted living apartment. She can no longer look things up on the internet, so she asked for an atlas so that she can find places on the map when she's watching international real estate shows, or around-the-world cuisine shows. The fact that this is written simply (for kids), and the maps are easy to find, mean she is able to get only the info she needs.
Great reference! Really nice pictures and very colorful. Lots of great information in it. I bought it for my middle school-er, but my elementary aged child loved it too. It is a great learning tool for not only school use but just to have at home.
We bought this for my 1st grade son after he borrowed a student atlas from the school library over Christmas break. He spent a lot of time looking/reading/studying the school atlas so we knew we needed to get him something. We chose this one because of the age group indicated in the description. It's turned out to be perfect. He loves reading about the different characteristics of each continent/land mass and can rattle off all kinds of obscure facts (highest and lowest recorded temperature in a country, etc!). This book is where he spends a good part of his free time. I find myself reminding him that he has other books and magazines he can read.If you have an information junkie like I do, this is definitely the atlas to pick!
