This is a great book for those who know nothing about orienteering or those who need a refresher course. Very easy to understand and contains great tips for compass work out in the field or on the lake. Not as in depth as it could be, but definitely enough to get you where you need to go and back safely.
I'm about 1/2 way through this book. A good book to brush up on skills... I've been out of working with maps for some time, this was a great way to get a refresher on things. It's written well, such that a beginner would benefit having this book on their bookshelf.
I've wanted to understand how to use a map and compass for a long time. I read this book with my compass and map in hand, did the small amount of practice provided, and I finally "get" it! I'm excited to try it out on the trail.
The book was very informative. Explanations were understandable. The cost of the book was reasonable. A worthwhile book to carry on the trail.
I learned a lot from this book already, and will likely go back and review it again. I found it packed full of useful information, and the review is because I think it's far beyond compass 101. The exercises were useful, and I think that after a second read, I'll be pretty comfortable getting myself back to where I need to be.
This is as good a book as any on the subject but it makes the same as every book I've read on the topic. It starts out very simple and then makes a quantum leap into more difficult material. Like going from 2+2 to algebra in the turn of a page.Despite attempts to simplify material like this the only real way to learn it is to practice it with someone who knows what they're doing. And then practice, practice, practice on your own.
Really informative, helped me learn how to properly utilize a topo map and compass when backpacking.
