In the past couple years, friends of mine have written six books. In that situation, I put a lot of weight on my shoulders. While it’s exciting that someone I know is having his work published, I feel pressured into reading and liking it. Luckily, I have really enjoyed each of those six books.I have another friend I’ve only known for a short period of time. Less than two years. There should be no pressure to hurry up and read her book. And little pressure, if any, to like it. I haven’t known her long enough (or well enough) to feel as if I’m in that position.Based on the title, this wasn’t something I thought I’d enjoy – the story of a single mother writing for other single mothers. In fact, aside from the word “single,” I can’t relate to the “mother” part at all. I’m not even a parent (though I always wanted to be a dad, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.)In an email to Laurie, I wrote, “I'm looking forward to reading the book. I get the impression it's more of a book for women, moms, single moms, etc. So I'm probably not your demo.” I lied. I wasn’t looking forward to it. I thought I offered a valid argument that would result in her telling me not to worry about reading it. Instead, she replied, “The book is really about anyone who has had an ‘I did not see that coming’ moment they have had to recover from. I just had to pick a demographic so I chose single parents.” Darn! How was I going to wriggle out of it now? After stalling as long as possible, I decided to put the file onto my Kindle and get it over with. Suddenly, I was technically challenged and couldn’t figure out what I was doing. I didn’t want to admit to her that I was incapable of putting a file onto an electronic reader.
