It Hurts When I Poop! A Story For Children Who Are Scared To Use The Potty

Ryan is scared to use the potty. He's afraid to have a poop because he's afraid it's going to hurt. When Ryan's parents take him to visit Dr Gold, she engages his imagination with the story of Bill the Coyote's messy house. She also shows him what happens inside the body, and explains how different foods make using the potty easy or hard.

This is for other moms and dads going through torture watching your child hold in their bowel movements. When the book came, we opened it and read it right away. My 4.5 year old daughter was captivated by the words. It was written for the child, about the child, and the story is about another child with the same issues. As we read along, she would say, "like me" after each part. She could relate to the problem of it hurting, that she holds it in thinking it will go away, that she too squeezes her butt muscles, that her belly hurts too, etc. She couldn't believe that another child had had the same thing before her, and this made her so interested in continueing to read. She listened so closely to every word. She asked questions about what things meant or what was happening and why! My daugther got so excited about eating the right foods to help her poop, and was thrilled to eat them, even though I had been trying these for years, and she would refuse and leave them on the plate. She decided to take control of her body after just one read. She pooped on the potty hours later. Then she had a pullup on that evening and tried to get to toilet, but didn't make it, but was letting all her poop come out. It was a ton. The next day, she was successful on the potty for 5 trips, and we celebrated. The next day two regular movements and she is trying to understand why more isn't coming. Having to explain to her how "dirty her house was" like in the book and now that she is letting it all go, there isn't so much and it feels so much better. she will say, "No more tummy aches!" We are still doing great and pray for continued success. We pull the book out just to "check" on foods, but really as a daily reminder in a way she loves. I think we really have it all figured out now.
