First Bull Run: First Victory For The South (Men And Battles)

The Battle of Bull Run took place in July 1861 and although when all was said and done, its impact was relatively limited, it did have a far-reaching effect on the American Civil War itself. The psychological impact of the battle on the combatants was indeed unquestionable, particularly for the North, and increased general consciousness of the reality of war and the challenges that lay ahead. The first Battle of Manassas was special because it was the first large-scale engagement in which troops were brought to the battle area by train, which enabled the Confederates to win this battle.Author Pascal le Pautremat has a doctorate in contemporary history; he is a lecturer in geopolitics and is a specialist of modern conflicts and crisis.

This is a short (82 page) book, produced in France...that is a fun little overview but one filled with massive factual errors. For example the author did NOT know that Winfield Scott and Winfield Scott Hancock are two different people...so we have Hancock pictured and assumed to be in charge of Union forces at the beginning of the war!The translation from the French is readable but often awkward. There are numerous photos and drawings ....and in the beginning some nice color plates of uniforms. Those plates are in the computerized generated style..NOT like Osprey's line of books. The plates also focus more on full dress and regulation wear rather than what was actually worn. This is a seriously flawed history with many errors...but a fun colorful introduction to the subject. Just don't take it as a serious contribution to Civil War literature.
