Civil War: Fort Sumter To Appomattox (General Military)

This book explores the political, historical, and cultural significance of the Civil War, AKA the War Between the States, examining its impact on the civilians and military personnel caught up in it.From the Civil War's outbreak at Fort Sumter, South Carolina in April 1861 until its conclusion at the Appomattox Court House, more than 10,000 battles, engagements and skirmishes were recorded across the length and breadth of America. Undoubtedly the most cataclysmic military struggle of the late nineteenth century, this war spanned four bloody years of fighting in which over 620,000 American soldiers and sailors lost their lives.

This brief survey benefits from its high quality authors. All of the major campaigns and battles are covered and although the treatments are short, they are thoughtful and accurate, The authors also find space for topics such as army life and the experiences of lesser known soldiers and civilians. This volume is an excellent introduction to civil war history. For those who would like a more comprehensive treatment there is James McPherson's (he contributed the foreword to this volume) Battle Cry of Freedom.

My greatest interest in history is the Civil War era and this book is great. Although somewhat dry, as most history books are, it is well researched and well documented, loaded with well detailed information. I don't recommend this book for the casual reader, but if you want to learn more of the finer details of the Civil War, this is the book for you.

The book is ok as a summary and had some interesting points. Lacks depth. I expected a little more given the quality of the authors.

This volume assumes the reader knows something about the ten years the war raged through the land. It is definitely not a " word-bite" book.

I found this book to be well researched and well written I never felt lectured to or talked down to while reading. I think it is an excellent reference book and deserves a place on collector's shelves. I went in with a fair amount of background knowledge but Gary Gallagher really filed in the blanks both on the military and social side.*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
