When 1865 opened the Confederacy's end was on the horizon: the Mississippi cut off Texas and Arkansas from the rest of the South, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was pinned to the gates of Richmond and Petersburg and General Sherman had control of Savannah, Georgia, and was poised for a march through the Carolinas which would be a repeat of his devastating March through Georgia. In this volume of the series Grant's Army of the Potomac finally disrupts the defensive ring around Petersburg and Lee's army, badly outnumbered and suffering for lack of food and equipment, abandoned the lines in an effort to retreat west and eventually join Johnston's army in the Carolinas. Meanwhile, Sherman's army set off to the northwest, capturing Columbia and burning it. His army met no resistance until fighting Monroe's Crossroads (not mentioned in this book), Averasboro and Bentonville in North Carolina. This book covers the surrender of Lee and Johnston and discusses some controversies involved. This volume includes sidebars on Scenes of Ruin in Columbia, Wilson's Raid, paintings of Lee's surrender, the Fallen at Fort Mahone, and Standoff on the James. Well-written and illustrated with maps, photos, artwork and pictures of some artifacts. While the maps the volume contains are very good there are some which could have been included to clarify some aspects of the fight, such as the route of march of Sherman through the Carolinas (or indeed, any of the Carolina battles). Instead, contemporary maps are used and are of dubious value considering their scale. Still, a good book with first-hand experiences by many of the participants.

This is an easy to read book with a "fast paced" narrative, and lots of color illustrations. However, the more one cross checks the "facts" given in this book, the less reliable it turns out to be. This is especially true of casualty figures, and numbers of troops involved in the various actions. Do NOT use this as a reference, to be sure.

For the casual Civil War enthusiast it's hard to beat the Time Life Series. Well researched with lots of excellent photographs (photography was in it's infancy at the time) and illustrations. This particular book does an excellent job of wrapping up the last days of the civil war. For those interested in grasping a big picture of the last days of the war I highly recommend this book.

I have read all of these books, they are interesting and insightful.

This show the waste of war.
