I am new to ghost hunting, or rather the culture and literature that has sprung up around it in the last five year or so, making me an ideal reader for a book of this nature. While one of the reviews states “[This book] is not only the definitive guide to Gettysburg hauntings, but a priceless overview of phantasmal research in general... 5 out of 5 starts,” I tend to be a healthy skeptic of these types of books simply because they are often a very good read, but all sizzle and no steak. Entertaining, yes, informative, well....Fortunately, Burke and Roth deliver both sizzle and steak in Ghost Soldiers of Gettysburg. Both are experienced writers and paranormal researchers who take the reader by the hand starting with this fascinating fact that helps to explain why Gettysburg is considered one of the most haunted pieces of real estate in the Union: on the first day of battle, an average of twenty-two Americans died every minute – a blood sacrifice that would lead to the now famous “Gettysburg Address” by President Abraham Lincoln, and landscape forever being referred to as 'this hallowed ground'. It was here that the high water mark of the Confederacy was blunted and turned back, ending Southern aspirations of a negotiated peace, and ensuring their military defeat. What was to be a search for shoes and boots for the Southern forces so they could fight later that year in the winter, resulted in a simple skirmish that turned into a gargantuan death struggle for who would write and define the history of the Republic. It is no wonder that so many still haunt the fields, woods, and buildings of what is now one of the most highly visited national parks in the United States.
