I was introduced to Ding Ling during a class I took in college called Asian Literature of Social Change. Not so much as a footnote in women's literature, Ding Ling really is one of the most audacious, bold and brilliant women in literature. As a feminist writer in communist China, she literally risk life and limb to share her beliefs through story. I was so captured by her story and her story through her stories that I chose to do my student undergraduate research on her (think thesis at the undergraduate level), which went on to be published. My search for more information about the women behind the stories lead me to libraries from North Carolina to California to China and in the process, I discovered a little about myself. This meticulously documented collection includes 11 short stories and two essays and vary in quality. From "Miss Sophia's Diary" to "Du Wanxiang" we watch the author go from the most taboo of subjects, homoeroticism, to in her later works, woman emanating the virtues of communism. It's almost impossible to believe the same women wrote all 11 volumes. But in my studies I learned about Ding Ling's imprisonment and how writing saved her life. Only after almost a year of research did I learn the same feisty, brazen women who authored "Miss Sophia"... she just had to find a new way to be herself. Fascinating journey.Even with the noted evolution of her work, Ling's shrewd observations of the war between the sexes--coupled with her dramatic flair--will reward contemporary Western readers.
