Gender: Ideas, Interactions, Institutions

A lively exploration of current questions of gender and their application to students today. Wade and Ferree’s first edition textbook is a lively introduction to the sociology of gender. Probing questions, the same ones that students often bring to the course, frame readable chapters that are packed with the most up-to-date scholarship available―in language students will understand. The authors use memorable examples mined from pop culture, history, psychology, biology, and everyday life to truly engage students in the study of gender and spark interest in sociological perspectives.

I used GENDER when teaching an introductory class on the sociology of gender to fresh and sophomore undergraduate university students. The book is written in an accessible fashion, which speaks to young adults. This, above all, is its strong suit. GENDER authors succeed in discussing complex ideas using simple, everyday language, without creating unnecessary separations between theoretical and empirical discussions, and without reverting to dichotomies. Each topic is discussed through intersectional lens. Examples are drawn from the world of reference of today’s youth—including sports, popular culture, and daily experiences.

Was able to meet Lisa Wade during my read through of this book. It was an assigned reading for a graduate Gender Studies course. Seriously well written, easy but thought-provoking read. Never a slow moment. Everyone needs to read this.

I used this book for my class, "Gender and Society," and it turned out to be an excellent choice. I love the intersectionality approach the text takes, allowing for deeper understanding of the course material and stimulating class discussion. The chapters are eloquently written while being accessible and witty at the same time. The authors respectfully and effectively relate often controversial material to students/readers of different backgrounds. I teach at a predominately white, conservative campus known for its presence of conservative Christians. Even in this context, my students genuinely enjoyed the reading and found the material insightful. Several students commented that they saw things in their lives they never noticed before, which is usually my main objective when teaching a 100-200 level sociology course. Another student said the book was very enjoyable and pleasurable to read. And for the cherry on top, the book is published by an independent publisher, which not only supports the efforts of these publishers but also means the book is affordable for students. All in all, what more could an instructor want from a textbook!

Normally school textbooks are boring!!! However this one is awesome!!!!! Am on chapter 5 and loving it makes reading engaging and I actually look forward to reading it!

Really easy to read. If you purchase the Kindle version, all of the bold terms can be condensed into flashcards with the "x-ray feature."

Rented this textbook for a class I'm taking and I've enjoyed the reading. Very relevant to 2016
