I knew I liked Hieu's work because I'd seen his perform live a few times, and he always is one of the most powerfully quiet poets in the room. I knew that I'd like this book when I picked it up because I'd seen Hieu's work in magazines like MUZZLE before. But after reading it (and missing my subway stop because I was so pulled in) I have to say I had no idea the book would be THIS GOOD. I am shocked that this is Hieu's debut collection and not the work of a much more seasoned writer. It is neat, painful, sparse and vivid. It has mysteries in it that reveal themselves as you read them. It deals with race, youth, family, and sexuality and even if his experiences are not yours -- they become yours in these poems. If you have a top 5 favorite poetry book listing, say goodbye to one of them, because 'This Way to the Sugar' is going to climb right to the top.

This is easily one of the best books of poetry i've ever read. Gorgeously scaffolded and executed,heart wrenching and humorous, it takes you from rot-gut to the balustrades. It's a sincere giftto the written word and to the imagination. Real talk, do yourself a favor and spend your sandwichmoney on this book and change your life.

This book of poetry blew me away. I thought it was inventive and special...it made Minnesota new again for me.

What a beautiful book of poetry. 10/10

I was very disappointed in the language and the rather graphic themes of the 5 or so poems I read in this book. I bought it as a gift for my poetry loving son, and feel I just can't give this to him. I recognize that people have the right to say and publish what they want, and that it can even be healing to express oneself this way. I simply wish the description would have somehow helped me know the topics of the poems would be such. Perhaps it is my fault for not following up on the names of some of the publications and such the author was involved in, for it could have helped me decipher what type of literature to expect.
