This first collection, in prose memoir and poetry, of the work of a Navajo poet and teacher describes attending a government school for Indian children and the challenge it presented to her socially, culturally, and expressively. Laura Tohe says this of her experience:"I was born in Fort Defiance, Arizona, and raised on the Diné (Navajo) Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. I grew up speaking Diné as my primary language. For a while we lived near Coyote Canyon with my grandparents while my parents operated the Tohe Coal Mine, a family business. After the mine closed, my mother moved us to Crystal, New Mexico, where she worked at the boarding school. I grew up without television in the beautiful Chuska Mountains, where only a dirt road connected us to the rest of the world."While growing up I heard stories all around me. As we drove down the dusty reservation road, my mother told many Diné stories. I liked to listen to her and Grandma gossip. Sometimes she would catch me eavesdropping and make me leave. My first publication originates from a story given to my mother by her great-grandmother."

Laura is an excellent storyteller, I couldn't put the book down. Very sad what we inflicted on America's native people. How arrogant we are to think our way and our religion is better than theirs. I shutter to think this was still happening until recently. To destroy the cultures and lives of so many people is unthinkable, it really is a form of genocide. Shame on our government.
Firstly, you have to know did a s***ty job describing this title on the headline for this page.The main reason I decided to purchase this book is because the assumption, according to the wrong information on this page, was it would be a bilingual edition; English/Navajo.On perusing inside the pages for this book it immediately came to my attention it was basically all in English with some peppered Navajo words in the text, if you find more that ten phrases in Navajo in the whole book that would be a lot.This was a major turnoff since as a customer I rely on the accuracy of 's description, but obviously this was one of their poops.If you're looking for bilingual books including the Navajo language I recommend "Beauty Beside Me: Stories of My Grandmother's Skirts." This book not only it's a bilingual edition; Eng/Nav but also includes a CD with both stories in each one of the languages read by a native speaker of the Navajo language.
It is a one sided tale of native drama. I do not really like native stories. It could have been better.
