I ordered this for my literature course and I have to admit, I wish that I would have bought the set rather than renting them. I really want to buy a new set of these just so I can have them in my own personal book collection. I love how the books were broken down into time periods and all of the readings were in an easy order and everything was easy to follow. The line numbers really helped when I had to write papers and reference text from the reading.Anyone who doesn't need them for a college course and just wants a great set of classic literature, should definitely purchase this!
These three volumes have the best work of ancient literature. Worth buying.
Bought this for my Literature class and it had a lot of great stories and information in them! Even read some of them outside of the class. Was a great price and actually a lot cheaper than other places!
All books came quickly and in relatively good shape. The anthology itself often only has excerpts from source material so it's more of an abridged anthology as opposed to a panoply of works. Excellent for a beginner or someone looking for a wide exposure to a lot of different works.
Haven't made it all the way through the anthology â Atlanta's recent Snowmeggedon and Snowmeggedagain made sure of that â but I am thoroughly impressed by the translations of the presented works thus far. I will say I was disappointed in the approach to the Iiliad. The poem being the only epic in the anthology to have been butchered in such a way that it was unenjoyable and ultimately disconnected.
I'd prefer that some of the more obscure texts hadn't been so heavily abridged, but it is an anthology so it was expected.
saved me $25.My school's bookstore wanted $50 for a 1-month rental.  wanted $20 for a 6 month rental, plus $5 for 1 day shipping. Thanks, .The book itself is eh. The translator decided to keep the language simple and attractive to young people and perhaps inadvertently killed much of the beauty and poetry of the works withing, particularly the Iliad.
This anthology was purchased for class, but I thoroughly enjoy reading all of its contents, because Norton does such an excellent job presenting and providing historical information with each well-translated piece. The books arrived in a timely manner, too.
