This is the second book my Native American literature class has read. From the first book we read about some historical stories from the Anishinaabe people from Basil Johnston. Now we are getting more modern stories from Jim Northrup, particularly about life on the Rez for this Vietnam veteran. Some of he stories he presents are raw and gritty, but I liked how he brought much needed humor in at the correct spots. The Native Americans are a resilient people, and their long, continuous struggle with the U.S. Government is mind boggling. Their past, present and future are not discussed enough in and outside of the classroom. They deserve way more than they are receiving. Books like this one are important in helping to open up and begin that conversation.

An awesome collection of poetry and prose. When the book first came out I heard Jim Northrup reading one of the poems on NPR. Was in my car. Went to nearest bookstore and ordered the book. Have given several copies to friends. The line that captured me so many years ago was something like this ..."my brother died in Viet Nam but he didn't fall down for fifteen tortured years." A great collection.

A very interesting narrative from a native American perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and learned new information.

I look for any books by this author. I like his honesty and openness.
