Indivisible: An Anthology Of Contemporary South Asian American Poetry

The first anthology of its kind, Indivisible brings together forty-nine American poets who trace their roots to Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Featuring award-winning poets including Meena Alexander, Agha Shahid Ali, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and Vijay Seshadri, here are poets who share a long history of grappling with a multiplicity of languages, cultures, and faiths. The poems gathered here take us from basketball courts to Bollywood, from the Grand Canyon to sugar plantations, and from Hindu-Muslim riots in India to anti-immigrant attacks on the streets of post–9/11 America. Showcasing a diversity of forms, from traditional ghazals and sestinas to free verse, experimental writing, and slam poetry, Indivisible presents 141 poems by authors who are rewriting the cultural and literary landscape of their time and their place. Includes biographies of each poet.

Yes, I'm a contributor to this anthology, and that might make me biased - but only because I know the editors, and the amount of energy, talent, and enthusiasm they've put into making this a great anthology, one that Billy Collins has called one of the finest poetry anthologies around! I'm honored to be a part of this.In 1991 the first Asian American Poetry Anthology was published, THE BIG AIEEEE!, and it was groundbreaking, visionary, and transformative. This book has the potential to be the same kind of landmark publication for years to come. Thanks for your support, and please spread the word!

Poetry is an amazing thing. Thoughtfully chosen words with even more thoughtfully chosen silence and space can sometimes convey more than an entire novel. For the Indian American diaspora, there is so much that can be said...and we are hearing through the voices of biggest fiction writers out there: Jhumpa Lahiri, Salman Rushdie, and more. But where are the poets? Finally, an anthology exists that shares the diaspora's experience through the medium of poetry. Reading Indivisible, what impressed me the most is the curation. So many different voices, some prominent, some emerging, and many talking about their contemporary experiences living in post 9-11 America. United, the voices all feel very relevant, very real. This project obviously took a lot of time to compose, and a lot of thought went into determining who and what material to include. The result is a book that is a joy to read, and one that is intelligently designed and presented.
