I don't remember applying for college as being so hair-raising but it has apparently become much more complicated than it was in my time. I have a son who is a high school junior and we are in the midst of this process right now. Having looked at several University admissions guide books, this is the best that we have found to date with the most real-world advice and step-by-step guidance on getting into the school of your choice. Whether it be advice on filling out the application, preparing for placement exams, seeking financial assistance, or learning how to brag artfully, this is a must-read for the would be college applicant. We are getting so much out of this wonderful resource and will continue to refer back to it over the coming months.
If you are looking for ways to ensure you have the advantage when applying and completing your college application then you need to download this book. Getting In & Standing Out will tell you what to do next and ensure that you have all the tools you need to make your application stand out from the rest of the pool. This book is full of insider information not only about how to present yourself but also contains advice on completing your personal statement and ensuring that you present the best possible version of you on your application as well as in person at your interview. The main advice that I felt stood out was that quality matters over quantity every time, you do not have to be a top grade student who excels at everything, it is about finding what makes you the person that you are, what is special about you and ensuring that you demonstrate this when applying. Confidence is the key but it has to be the right amount! There is a chapter on listening to the right advice and also avoiding making fatal mistakes during interview. When you consider the weight of the subject matter this book is actually not that bad of a read, it is written in the first person which can make it seem like your own personal mentor! I would have no hesitation in recommending this book it really is essential reading. There is a special chapter devoted to Harvard and the Ivies if this is your aim then you will need this information.
Having worked with Dr. B, I would tell students across the country to get her new book because in it, youâll find all the key points to her admissions success system. Dr. Bedor has this amazing ability to pull out the beautiful and compelling story thatâs inside each of us and teach us how to write it in our personal statements and supplementary essays so Admissions understands our worth and accepts us! The book talks about everything from leadership opportunities to little known merit scholarships to the right test prep for different students to the right courses to take. The main message is, be true to yourself and be adventurous in high school because those years never come again, and they give us a hint about what weâre capable of being in college and in the future.
This book provided a stellar insight into what admissions is looking for TODAY! As someone who was trapped in the old admissions process of being a Renaissance man who did everything, this book was an eye-opener to make the best of the next few years of high school while acing the MODERN admissions process. Thank you so much, Dr. Bedor, not only for your wonderful insight in your book, but also your inspiration to help me find my authentic self in high school, to help me identify how I am going to help society both now and later, and to see high school as a myriad of opportunities that will mold me into the best and most beneficial person I can be not only for the public, but for myself! Rather than trying to see high school as a subway stop to college, it is now my personal dream-ovator!! Thanks for everything.
