Common Core Math Workouts, Grade 6 is a well written book. I order it to see how usefull it would be in teaching if a child did not understand. While the pratice questions are pretty good, it does not teach at all.
Spectrum Math 6 is much better. This one is an uninteresting collection of problems for kids to solve. If your child is bored with Math, this will make him even more bored with the subject.
The torture started on page one. I was asked to determine how much red, blue, and white fabric I needed to sew a quilt. I got out some graph paper, and carefully drew the quilt block and colored it. Then I divided the shapes into rectangles and triangles. I discovered that there were lots of rectangles and triangles to keep track of--and I had to multiply multi-digit numbers, too. Few sixth graders would have the patience to arrive at an accurate answer! The authors don't have the right answer either. They have forgotten that the quilt pieces will need a 1/4 inch seam allowance and that fabric is sold in bolts of varying width. So much for real life examples! The second page starts with: "Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world mathematical problems." Some of the later pages are o.k., but I doubt you will get to them because your student will be either crying or stomping around the room at the sight of this book. This review is not an attack on Common Core; it is an attack on poorly developed materials which give students negative feelings toward math. Usually I give books I don't want to Friends of the Library; this one has a different destination: the trash.
I got this for my son going into the 6th grade to work on for the summer. I should have got him the fifth grade book because come to find out his teacher did not teach common core, so this book works but is a little challenging for him. A challenge is good though.
Its not worth the price. One way it is good for a quick glance of what will be in common core for sixth grade math. But there are no much exercises in each topic. The book has very little pages and it does cover the topic in depth.
Each topic had only one or two pages. Hardly a lesson. I will use the pages as a per-test for my lessons.
Great book. All the standards are covered with a high level of rigor. My kids struggled a bit but finally got it. That's the way it's supposed to be. Great teacher resource!!!
Math! Math! Math! Who doesn't love math? Okay, lots of people, but I'm not one of them and neither is my 6th grade grandson. He somehow grasps math better than any subject, and holds onto the principles and concepts like magic. So, though he's passing to the 7th grade in September, I knew this book could only help to fortify what he's already learned and make sure he retains this invaluable information over the summer. Yes, school doesn't stop for us in June. Also, being in college and of an older age, I haven't had mathematics in quite some time. However, before I can get the bachelors degree I'm pursuing, I will have to tackle college level math. Guess what? This book is EXACTLY what I need. Yes, even at the 6th grade level. You'd be surprised at how much you forget when you aren't required to tackle a subject repetitiously (over and over and over again).I'm learning math all over again along with my grandson. His school has a Cyber School environment where the children are able to do a lot of their work on computers and can also continue via computer outside of the school, so his computer sits right next to mine and, even as I help him figure out some things, he's right there teaching me those that I don't know.I used to worry frantically about tackling college math as I've been away for so long. My grade point average is 3.945 and I dread the though of it coming down due to a less than "A" grade in math. Thanks to these Common Core Math Workouts, and my brainiac grandson, I no longer worry at all. I'm actually looking forward to college math.I recommend this product to anyone serious about education. Whether it's for a child you love or yourself or some other progressive minded person, you can't go wrong with Math Workouts!
