Making Big Words: Multilevel, Hands-On Spelling And Phonics Activities (A Good Apple Language Arts Activity Book For Grades 3-6)

This innovative book combines phonics and spelling in 150 hands-on activities that will challenge children as they learn new words and sort them by letter patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and big word parts. With each lesson, students use pre-selected letters to make 15-20 words, starting with short words and building up to longer words. They will also discover that changing just one letter or the sequence of letters in a word can change its meaning. It also includes guidelines for creating lessons to suit your specific needs!

This is a great how-to book for one specific phonics & spelling teaching strategy. It has made a big difference in my third graders ability to sound out unknown words and incorporate their knowledge of spelling patterns. Making Words is geared for K-3rd. Making Big Words is for 3rd thru 5th graders. It's a hands-on approach and it is very adaptable. You can do it just as suggested or adjust it to your students' particular need. It includes hundreds of lessons. It can also be used in coordination with thematic units that you may be using in your room. A great resource. Worth every penny. I just love Patricia Cunningham!

I teach Title 1 disadvantaged reading students, most are learning English as a second language. I did a word a day with my 6th, 7th , and 8th graders. The making words lessons allowed me to introduce vocabulary, point out spelling patterns, talk about vowel variances, and talk about how our words are made up. I asked them to write the words as well as manipulate the letters. Sometimes, I asked them to group the words if there were several words with the same spelling pattern.

I bought this book at the beginning of our school year for two of my boys. They are eight and 10 and were having a difficult time sitting still for spelling and were kind of lost with their regular spelling books. This book has really helped them understand spelling because it helps them see that most big words are little words, prefixes and/or suffixes strung together.I didn't want to use the cutout letters in the back of the book. I have a stash of Scrabble letters. So, I used them and picked out all the letters particular for that lesson. That's how this book works. All the words from each lesson can be spelled with the letters from the longest word. So those letters are given to the student. The student then forms the words as each word is read. Then I decided to add to and change things for my boys. I started having them write the words from each lesson and stopped giving them the letter tiles. It was getting too easy to guess the correct spelling because they use the small amount of letters to spell all the words from each lesson.I had them write the misspelled words and use them in their writing. They don't misspell too many words any longer. This book has helped my boys and they like it (or at least they don't mind doing spelling now)

The information is great. There are many, many, many words to make, and you can use the table of contents or index to find words that fit your needs. The only problem I've had so far is that it is pretty tough to get the pages of letter cards to copy correctly - the front and back of the page have to perfectly align on the photocopy, and that is not an easy task unless you wish to tear the pages out of your book and send them through the copier that way. I ended up retyping the letter rows into a Word table and printing those instead. I do like the book, though. The words made and the sorts allow for work on spelling, reading by analogy, and word chunking. I especially like that I can sneak some phonemic awareness activity in by breaking the words made into their phonemes for students who are older and still needing help with phonemic awareness.

I like these books. It is a time saver to have word lists ready made. I use my own letter tiles. I pick and choose according to what sorts of words I'm working on with a particular student. Sometimes I need to adapt a list a bit. I own four of the books in this series so can almost always find a lesson that will work. My kiddos always like trying to figure out the last word that uses all the letters.

Even in the third grade, students find difficulties decoding multisyllabic words. Not only does this book make it easier for them, but it exposes them to spelling patterns and sounds that help reading fun. I live by it, and have held workshops for fellow colleagues. They have found it to be beneficial, too.

This is a very useful book of lessons. My students love the learning activities and they are learning letter-sound patterns and spelling while engaged in fun activities. They are disappointed when we don't do "Making Big Words."

Students love making words! I have the activities prepped in advance and students just go to where it is. I also use it in conjunction with Magnetic Teaching Tiles and let students make the words on the metal air handling unit in the room (could also use cookie sheets).
